Essay
As soon as they open their eyes in the morning, many people reach for their mobile first, and their last look before sleeping at night is also at the mobile. We call this world of messages, photos, videos and "likes" social media. Today social media has become an inseparable part of our daily life.
Social media means the apps and websites that connect people through the internet and let them share thoughts, information, photos and videos. Because of it, the world has truly become a "global village".
Social media has many advantages. We can talk to and see relatives living abroad in a moment. Old school friends meet again. Important information reaches thousands of people within minutes. It is very useful for getting help during disasters. Students can benefit from educational videos, study groups and guidance from experts. Small businesses, farmers and artisans can take their products directly to customers. Talents like singing, painting and writing have found a big stage; even an artist from a village can present his art to the world.
But every coin has another side. Overuse of social media has become a big danger today. Scrolling that begins as "just five minutes" goes on for hours, and time for studies, play and sleep shrinks without our noticing. Many people become addicted to it. Fake news and rumours spread in a moment and create misunderstandings in society. Cyber crimes such as fake accounts, online fraud, trolling and misuse of personal information are increasing.
It affects health and relationships too. Constantly looking at a screen strains the eyes and leads to too little sleep. Seeing other people's shiny photos creates the habit of comparing ourselves and gives rise to low self-esteem. People sitting in the same house are seen lost in their own mobiles; real conversation decreases. Virtual friends increase, but close relationships drift apart.
That is why social media must be used wisely. Students should give it only a fixed time each day. They should keep the mobile away while studying and before sleeping. Before forwarding any news, they should check whether it is true. Personal information, addresses and photos should not be given to strangers. Only good, useful and positive information should be shared.
Social media is a powerful tool; whether it is good or bad depends on how we use it. Fire can be used for cooking, and also to burn down a house. Everyone should resolve to be the master of social media, not its slave.

Writing tips
- In an "advantages and disadvantages" essay, give both sides roughly equal space and end with your own balanced conclusion.
- Use expressions like "global village", "virtual world", "wise use" and "digital discipline".
- Writing what you yourself can do as a student (a time limit, checking news) makes the essay effective.
- Use a line of your own, for example: "Instead of counting likes on a screen, count the smiles of the person in front of you."
