Essay
Of the three seasons – summer, monsoon and winter – I like the monsoon the most. When everyone is tired of the burning summer heat and dark clouds gather in the sky, my heart begins to dance with joy.
When the first shower falls on the ground, a special smell of wet earth spreads everywhere. I love that smell. In our region the rains usually begin in June. Within a few days, the dry-looking land turns green. Snow-white waterfalls start flowing down the hills. Dry rivers, streams and wells fill with water. Peacocks spread their feathers and dance, and the frogs begin croaking.
The monsoon is the most important season for farmers. Only when it rains on time and in enough quantity do the fields give a good crop. So for farmers, rain is life itself. Farmers sow their seeds and soon the fields sway with crops.
We children have great fun in the rainy season. We make paper boats and float them in the puddles. I love getting wet in the rain and eating hot bhajis. Sometimes a beautiful rainbow appears in the sky.
But the monsoon also brings some problems. If it rains too much, there are floods. Potholes appear on roads and everything becomes muddy. Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water and spread diseases. So we should drink boiled water, keep our surroundings clean and not let water collect.
Rainwater is precious. To stop it from flowing away and being wasted, we should store rainwater and plant as many trees as possible. The monsoon gives us new life, greenery and hope, and that is why it is my favourite season.
