Essay
"He finished his studies and is just sitting at home" – this sentence is heard in many homes today. The degree is in hand and the person is ready to work, but there is no work; this pain is very deep. Unemployment is one of the most serious problems facing our country today.
A person who has the wish and the ability to work but does not get suitable work is considered unemployed. Unemployment appears in many forms. Not getting a job even after education is educated unemployment. In farming there is work only for a few months of the year and none for the rest of the time; this is seasonal unemployment. When more people than needed work on a small farm, and production would not fall even if some of them left, it is called disguised unemployment.
This problem has many causes. The growing population is the first; every year the number of people looking for work increases, but jobs are not created at the same pace. Our education system stresses bookish knowledge and neglects practical skills. So there is a big gap between the skilled workers industries need and the graduates who are available. Many young people spend years only waiting for a government job. Since there are few industries in rural areas, people have to rush to the cities.
The effects of unemployment are far-reaching. Family income falls and poverty rises. Repeated failure increases disappointment, low self-esteem and stress among young people. There is a fear that some may turn to the wrong path. The energy of the country's youth, which should be used for progress, is wasted. The country's economy also suffers.
Efforts are needed at every level to solve this problem. Education must be joined with skills. Schools and colleges should give practical training in computers, technical work and farm-related businesses. Young people should make use of ITIs, diploma courses and apprenticeship schemes in industries. If small industries such as dairy, food processing, poultry and handicrafts grow at the village level, migration will reduce. Banks should give easy loans and guidance to new entrepreneurs.
Young people too must change their mindset. No work is small or lowly. In the digital age there is great scope for online business, the service sector and new ideas. Continuing to learn new things is the real provision for the journey in today's times.
Unemployment is a big challenge, but it is not unbeatable. If the government, educational institutions, industries and youth work hand in hand, every hand will find work. The problem will truly be overcome only when today's young people become job givers instead of job seekers.
