Essay
The moment we pick up a good book, we reach another world. Sometimes we walk the forts of history, sometimes we travel among the planets and stars, and sometimes we laugh and cry with the characters in a story. Books take us around the world without our taking a single step, and that is why they are our true friends.
The first and biggest benefit of reading is knowledge. Books give us information about many subjects – science, history, geography, literature and the lives of great people. Experiences we cannot have ourselves reach us through the writing of others. This deepens our understanding and broadens the way we look at the world.
Regular reading enriches our language. New words, proverbs, idioms and well-made sentences stay in our minds on their own. They help us when writing essays, speaking and answering in exams. Reading improves concentration and memory, and teaches us to think for ourselves. We get into the habit of looking at a question from different sides.
Reading is not only for studies; it is also for joy. When we feel low, a funny story lightens the mind. An inspiring biography gives us the hope to do something good ourselves. Reading a poem brings peace to the mind. The company of books never becomes boring.
Today, in the age of mobile phones, TV and the internet, children's reading habit seems to be declining. Being used to short videos and messages reduces the patience to read longer texts calmly. But technology can also be used for reading; e-books and online libraries are good tools. What matters is keeping the love of reading alive.
To build a reading habit, we should set aside at least half an hour every day for reading. We should begin with topics we like – stories, adventure, science fiction or biographies. We should make full use of the school library. We can talk with friends about the books we read and note down favourite lines in a notebook. We can also start the good practice of giving books as birthday gifts.
If we look at the lives of great people, we see a reading habit behind the success of many of them. Books taught them to ask questions, to dream and to work hard to make those dreams come true. Reading also makes us more sensitive, because reading stories of other people's joys and sorrows helps us understand their feelings. Whether it is a competitive exam or a job interview, general knowledge and clear thinking are needed everywhere, and both come from reading.
Reading is food for the mind. Just as the body needs nourishing food, the mind needs good thoughts. That is why it is said in Marathi, "Vachal tar ghadal" – read, and you will grow. Let us pick up a new book today and begin this beautiful journey of reading.
