Introduction to Psychology

Quick summary

Psychology is the scientific study of behaviour and mental processes. It began as a part of philosophy and became an independent science in 1879, when Wilhelm Wundt set up the first psychology laboratory in Leipzig, Germany. Different schools of thought, such as structuralism, functionalism, behaviourism, Gestalt and psychoanalysis, shaped the subject. Today psychology has many branches and practical uses.

Key points

  • The word psychology comes from the Greek words psyche (soul) and logos (study). Its meaning changed over time: study of soul → mind → consciousness → behaviour.
  • Modern definition: psychology (मानसशास्त्र) is the scientific study of behaviour and mental processes.
  • Behaviour includes observable actions (walking, talking). Mental processes include thinking, memory, emotions and perception.
  • Psychology is a science because it uses systematic observation, experiments, measurement and verification.
  • Goals of psychology: to describe, explain, predict and control behaviour.
  • Structuralism (Wundt, Titchener): studied the structure of conscious experience through introspection.
  • Functionalism (William James, John Dewey): studied how the mind helps us adapt to the environment.
  • Behaviourism (J.B. Watson, 1913; later B.F. Skinner): studied only observable behaviour.
  • Gestalt psychology (Wertheimer, Köhler, Koffka): "the whole is different from the sum of its parts"; studied perception.
  • Psychoanalysis (Sigmund Freud): the role of the unconscious mind.
  • Humanistic psychology (Maslow, Rogers): free will and self-actualisation. Cognitive psychology studies thinking, memory and information processing.

Important terms

  • Behaviour – any activity of an organism that can be observed or measured.
  • Introspection – looking inward and reporting one's own conscious experience.
  • Unconscious – the part of the mind with wishes and memories we are not aware of (Freud).
  • Pure (basic) psychology – branches that develop theory, e.g. general, developmental, abnormal psychology.
  • Applied psychology – use of psychology to solve practical problems, e.g. clinical, counselling, industrial, educational psychology.

Schools of Psychology

Quick summary

A school of psychology is a group of thinkers who share one view about what psychology should study and how. Modern psychology began with Wundt's laboratory in 1879. After that came structuralism, functionalism, behaviourism, Gestalt psychology and psychoanalysis, and later humanistic and cognitive psychology. Each school added something useful, and today most psychologists combine their ideas.

Key points

  • Wilhelm Wundt set up the first psychology laboratory at Leipzig, Germany, in 1879. He is called the father of experimental psychology.
  • Structuralism (संरचनावाद) – Wundt and his student E. B. Titchener. It tried to break conscious experience into basic elements: sensations, images and feelings. Method: introspection (looking inward at one's own experience).
  • Functionalism (कार्यवाद) – William James (Principles of Psychology, 1890) and John Dewey. It asked what the mind does and how it helps a person adapt to the environment. Influenced by Darwin.
  • Behaviourism (वर्तनवाद) – J. B. Watson (1913), later B. F. Skinner. Psychology should study only observable behaviour, not the mind. Learning and environment shape behaviour.
  • Gestalt psychology (समग्रतावाद) – Max Wertheimer, Wolfgang Köhler, Kurt Koffka. "The whole is different from the sum of its parts." Studied perception, e.g. the phi phenomenon, and insight learning.
  • Psychoanalysis (मनोविश्लेषण) – Sigmund Freud. Behaviour is driven by the unconscious mind, childhood experiences and sexual and aggressive drives. Methods: free association, dream analysis.
  • Humanistic psychology – Abraham Maslow, Carl Rogers. Humans are basically good and have free will; they strive for self-actualisation. Called the "third force".
  • Cognitive psychology – Ulric Neisser (1967), Jean Piaget. Studies mental processes like memory, thinking and problem solving; compares the mind to an information processor.
  • Today psychologists follow an eclectic approach, taking the best ideas from many schools.

Important terms

  • School of thought – a shared set of beliefs about the subject matter and method of a science.
  • Introspection – a trained person reports their own conscious experience.
  • Unconscious – the part of the mind we are not aware of, but which affects behaviour.
  • Phi phenomenon – seeing movement when two lights flash one after the other (Wertheimer, 1912).
  • Self-actualisation – fully developing one's potential.
  • Eclecticism – choosing and combining ideas from different approaches.

5 important questions

Q1. Who founded the first psychology laboratory and when?

Wilhelm Wundt founded the first psychology laboratory at Leipzig, Germany, in 1879. This date is taken as the start of psychology as a separate science.

Q2. What is the main idea of Gestalt psychology?

Gestalt psychologists said we perceive things as organised wholes, not as separate pieces. "The whole is different from the sum of its parts." Wertheimer, Köhler and Koffka founded it.

Q3. Compare structuralism and functionalism.

  • Structuralism (Wundt, Titchener) asked what consciousness is made of; functionalism (James, Dewey) asked what it is for.
  • Structuralism used trained introspection; functionalism used varied methods.
  • Structuralism was narrow and lab-based; functionalism led to applied fields like educational psychology.
  • Criticism of structuralism: introspection is subjective and cannot be checked.
  • Conclusion: functionalism prepared the ground for behaviourism.

Q4. Explain behaviourism and its contribution.

  • Started by J. B. Watson in 1913; developed by Skinner.
  • Rejects mind and consciousness as unscientific; studies observable stimulus–response.
  • Environment and learning explain behaviour ("give me a dozen healthy infants…").
  • Contribution: objective methods, laws of learning, behaviour therapy.
  • Criticism: ignores thinking, feelings and inner processes.

Q5. Describe psychoanalysis and the humanistic school.

  • Freud: unconscious motives, id–ego–superego, early childhood, defence mechanisms; therapy by free association and dream analysis.
  • Criticism: based on patients, hard to test scientifically.
  • Humanistic school (Maslow, Rogers) arose as a reaction to both behaviourism and psychoanalysis.
  • It stresses free will, personal growth, self-actualisation; Rogers' client-centred therapy.
  • Both schools shaped modern personality theory and counselling.

Quick summary

Psychology is a wide science with many branches. Some branches build basic knowledge (pure or theoretical psychology) and others use that knowledge to solve real problems (applied psychology). Knowing the branches helps students see where psychology is used and what careers it offers.

Key points

  • Pure (basic) branches aim to discover laws of behaviour; applied branches use those laws in daily life.
  • General psychology studies normal adult behaviour: sensation, learning, memory, motivation, personality.
  • Experimental psychology studies behaviour under controlled laboratory conditions.
  • Physiological / bio-psychology studies the brain, nervous system and hormones in relation to behaviour.
  • Developmental psychology studies changes from conception to old age; child psychology is a part of it.
  • Social psychology studies how people think, feel and act in the presence of others.
  • Abnormal psychology studies the causes and kinds of mental disorders.
  • Clinical psychology diagnoses and treats mental disorders through tests and psychotherapy.
  • Counselling psychology helps normal people with educational, career, marriage and personal problems.
  • Educational psychology applies psychology to teaching and learning in schools.
  • Industrial / organisational psychology deals with selection, training, motivation and morale of employees.
  • Newer fields: health, sports, environmental, forensic, community, positive and cyber psychology.

Important terms

  • Pure psychology – builds theories and principles.
  • Applied psychology – uses those principles to solve practical problems.
  • Forensic psychology – psychology applied to law, crime and courts.
  • Health psychology – how behaviour and stress affect physical health.
  • Environmental psychology – how noise, crowding and climate affect behaviour.
  • Positive psychology – study of happiness, strengths and well-being (Martin Seligman).

Important thinkers and theories

ClinicalDiagnosis and therapyHospitals, clinics
CounsellingGuidance for everyday problemsSchools, colleges, family courts
EducationalLearning and teachingSchools, teacher training
Industrial/organisationalWork behaviourFactories, offices, HR
ForensicCrime and lawPolice, courts, prisons
SportsPerformance and motivationTeams, academies
  • Martin Seligman launched positive psychology in 1998 as president of the American Psychological Association.

5 important questions

Q1. Distinguish between pure and applied psychology.

Pure psychology discovers basic facts and laws of behaviour, for example how memory works. Applied psychology uses these facts to solve problems, for example improving study methods or treating patients.

Q2. What is clinical psychology?

It is the applied branch that assesses, diagnoses and treats mental disorders using psychological tests, interviews and psychotherapy. Clinical psychologists work in hospitals and clinics.

Q3. Explain any four pure branches of psychology.

  • General psychology: basic mental processes of normal adults.
  • Experimental psychology: laboratory study with control of variables.
  • Developmental psychology: growth across the lifespan.
  • Social psychology: individual in a social setting.
  • Add one example of research from each.

Q4. Describe the applied branches of psychology.

  • Clinical, counselling, educational and industrial psychology – define each with its work setting.
  • Forensic and health psychology as newer fields.
  • Show how each uses principles from pure branches.
  • Conclude: applied fields make psychology useful to society.

Q5. Write on the scope of psychology in modern India.

  • Schools and colleges: counsellors, special educators.
  • Hospitals: clinical psychologists, de-addiction centres.
  • Industry: HR, training, consumer research and advertising.
  • Defence, police and courts: selection, forensic work.
  • Sports, NGOs and community mental health (for example the Tele-MANAS helpline launched in 2022).
  • Conclude: demand is rising because of stress and awareness of mental health.

Exam tip

For a "branches" answer, first divide into pure and applied, then write a one-line definition plus one example for each branch.

Methods of Psychology

Quick summary

Psychologists collect facts about behaviour using scientific methods. The main methods are introspection, observation, experimental method, case study, survey (questionnaire and interview), correlational method and psychological tests. Each method has merits and limitations, and the choice depends on the problem being studied.

Key points

  • A scientific method has steps: identifying a problem, forming a hypothesis, collecting data, analysing data and drawing conclusions.
  • Introspection (आत्मनिरीक्षण): looking within and reporting one's own experiences; used by Wundt. It is subjective and cannot be used with children or animals.
  • Observation: watching and recording behaviour as it happens. Naturalistic observation is in natural settings; controlled (laboratory) observation is in planned settings. In participant observation the observer joins the group.
  • Experimental method: the most scientific method. The experimenter changes one variable and measures its effect on another, keeping other conditions constant.
  • Case study: an in-depth study of one person or a small group, using history, interviews and tests. Common in clinical psychology; Freud used case studies.
  • Survey method: collects information from many people using questionnaires and interviews.
  • Correlational method: finds the relationship between two variables. Correlation does not prove cause and effect.
  • Psychological tests: standardised tools to measure intelligence, aptitude, personality, interests.
  • Ethics: informed consent, confidentiality, no harm, and debriefing of participants.

Important terms

  • Independent variable (IV) – the variable the experimenter changes.
  • Dependent variable (DV) – the variable that is measured (the response).
  • Extraneous / controlled variables – other factors that must be kept constant.
  • Experimental group – receives the treatment (IV).
  • Control group – does not receive the treatment; used for comparison.
  • Hypothesis – a testable statement or prediction about the relation between variables.
  • Sample – the group of people actually studied from a larger population.

Key facts

MethodMain meritMain limitation
IntrospectionDirect access to inner experienceSubjective; not for children, animals
ObservationNatural behaviour studiedObserver bias; time consuming
ExperimentCause–effect relation; repeatableArtificial setting; ethical limits
Case studyDeep, detailed informationCannot generalise to others
SurveyData from large groups quicklyPeople may give false or socially desirable answers
CorrelationalStudies variables that cannot be manipulatedCannot prove causation
  • Correlation coefficient (r) ranges from −1 to +1. +1 = perfect positive, −1 = perfect negative, 0 = no relationship.

5 important questions

Q1. What is the difference between independent and dependent variables?

The independent variable is the factor changed by the experimenter; the dependent variable is the behaviour measured to see the effect of that change.

Q2. What is participant observation?

It is a type of observation in which the observer becomes a member of the group being studied and records behaviour from inside.

Q3. Explain the experimental method with an example.

  • Problem and hypothesis, e.g. "Noise reduces memory performance."
  • IV: noise (present/absent); DV: number of words recalled.
  • Experimental group studies with noise; control group without noise.
  • Other variables (time, word list, age) kept constant.
  • Compare results and draw conclusion.
  • Merits: cause–effect; limits: artificial, not all problems can be tested.

Q4. Describe the observation method, its types, merits and limitations.

  • Meaning: systematic watching and recording.
  • Types: naturalistic and controlled; participant and non-participant.
  • Merits: real behaviour, useful for children and animals.
  • Limitations: observer bias, behaviour may change when people know they are watched, cannot find causes, time consuming.

Q5. Explain the case study method.

  • Detailed study of an individual's history and present condition.
  • Sources: interviews, records, tests, family members.
  • Used in clinical, counselling and educational settings.
  • Merits: rich, in-depth data; helpful in diagnosis.
  • Limitations: subjective, memory errors, cannot generalise.

Exam tip

For any method, write: meaning, steps or types, example, merits and limitations. The IV–DV example of the experimental method is almost always asked.

The Experimental Method

Quick summary

The experimental method is the most scientific method in psychology because it can show cause and effect. The researcher changes one factor (the independent variable), keeps other factors constant, and measures the effect on behaviour (the dependent variable). Control of variables, experimental and control groups, and careful design are the heart of an experiment.

Key points

  • An experiment (प्रयोग) is observation of behaviour under controlled conditions, where one variable is changed on purpose.
  • Variable – any factor that can change or take different values (noise, age, marks).
  • Independent variable (IV) – the factor the experimenter changes (e.g. amount of noise).
  • Dependent variable (DV) – the behaviour that is measured (e.g. number of words remembered).
  • Extraneous (relevant / intervening) variables – other factors that may affect the DV (fatigue, time of day, light); they must be controlled.
  • Hypothesis – a testable statement about the expected relation between IV and DV.
  • Experimental group receives the treatment; control group does not. The groups are compared.
  • Methods of control: elimination, keeping conditions constant, randomisation (random assignment of participants), counterbalancing (changing the order of conditions) and matching.
  • Designs: between-groups (different people in each condition) and within-group/repeated measures (same people in all conditions).
  • Field experiments are done in natural settings (class, factory); laboratory experiments in a lab.
  • Ethics: informed consent, no harm, confidentiality, debriefing, right to withdraw.

Important terms

  • Subject / participant – the person whose behaviour is studied.
  • Experimenter – the person who plans and conducts the experiment.
  • Operational definition – defining a variable by how it is measured (anxiety = score on an anxiety scale).
  • Placebo – a fake treatment that looks real, used to check expectation effects.
  • Experimenter bias – the experimenter's expectations unknowingly affecting results.
  • Double-blind – neither the participant nor the person testing knows who got the real treatment.

Important thinkers and theories

StepWhat is done
1. ProblemSelect a clear research question
2. HypothesisPredict the IV–DV relation
3. VariablesIdentify IV, DV, extraneous variables
4. DesignChoose groups and controls
5. ConductGive instructions, apply IV, record DV
6. AnalyseUse statistics to compare groups
7. ConcludeAccept or reject the hypothesis; report
  • Example: Does music affect concentration? IV = music vs. silence; DV = number of sums solved correctly in 10 minutes; controls = same room, same time, same difficulty level.

5 important questions

Q1. Define independent and dependent variable.

The independent variable is the factor the experimenter deliberately changes. The dependent variable is the behaviour measured to see the effect of that change. Example: hours of sleep (IV) and memory score (DV).

Q2. Why is a control group used?

A control group does not receive the treatment. Comparing it with the experimental group shows whether the change in behaviour is really caused by the independent variable and not by other factors.

Q3. Explain the steps of the experimental method with an example.

  • Write the seven steps from problem to conclusion.
  • Use one example throughout (music and concentration).
  • Mention random assignment and constant conditions.
  • End with how the result is reported.

Q4. What are extraneous variables? How are they controlled?

  • Meaning, with examples (participant variables: age, intelligence; situational: noise, light; experimenter variables).
  • Control techniques: elimination, constancy, randomisation, matching, counterbalancing, blind procedures.
  • Why control matters: it allows a cause-and-effect conclusion.

Q5. Discuss the merits and limitations of the experimental method.

  • Merits: cause and effect, precise measurement, can be repeated (replication), objective.
  • Limitations: artificial lab setting, not all problems can be tested (ethics), costly and time-consuming, small samples, experimenter bias.
  • Conclude: combine with observation and surveys for complete understanding.

Exam tip

Always give an example in which you clearly label the IV, DV and one controlled variable — examiners look for these three words.

(Axon terminals).

Quick summary

All behaviour and mental processes depend on the body, mainly the nervous system and the endocrine (hormone) system. The basic unit of the nervous system is the neuron, which carries messages as electrical and chemical signals. The brain controls thinking, feeling and movement, while hormones from glands affect growth, mood and emotions.

Key points

  • The neuron (चेतापेशी) is the nerve cell. Its parts are dendrites (receive messages), cell body (soma), axon (carries messages away) and axon terminals.
  • Many axons are covered with a fatty myelin sheath that speeds up the nerve impulse; gaps in it are the nodes of Ranvier.
  • Types of neurons: sensory (afferent), motor (efferent) and interneurons (association neurons).
  • The gap between two neurons is the synapse. Messages cross it by chemicals called neurotransmitters.
  • The nervous system has two main parts: the Central Nervous System (CNS) – brain and spinal cord; and the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS).
  • The PNS has the somatic system (voluntary muscles) and the autonomic system (involuntary organs).
  • The autonomic system has the sympathetic division ("fight or flight") and the parasympathetic division ("rest and digest").
  • The reflex is a quick automatic response controlled by the spinal cord, e.g. pulling the hand away from a hot object.
  • The endocrine glands release hormones directly into the blood.

Important terms

  • Cerebrum – largest part of the brain; has two hemispheres joined by the corpus callosum.
  • Cerebral cortex – outer layer of the cerebrum; controls higher functions.
  • Cerebellum – controls balance, posture and coordination.
  • Medulla oblongata – controls breathing, heart rate and blood pressure.
  • Hypothalamus – controls hunger, thirst, temperature, sex and emotions; links brain with the pituitary gland.
  • Thalamus – relay station for sensory messages (except smell).
  • Limbic system – emotion and memory; includes the hippocampus and amygdala.

Key facts

  • Common neurotransmitters: acetylcholine, dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine, GABA.

5 important questions

Q1. What is a synapse?

A synapse is the tiny gap between the axon terminal of one neuron and the dendrite or cell body of the next, across which messages pass with the help of neurotransmitters.

Q2. Why is the pituitary gland called the master gland?

Because its hormones control the working of many other endocrine glands such as the thyroid, adrenal and gonads.

Q3. Describe the structure and types of neurons.

  • Dendrites, cell body, axon, myelin sheath, axon terminals.
  • Impulse moves from dendrite → cell body → axon → terminals.
  • Sensory neurons carry messages from sense organs to CNS.
  • Motor neurons carry messages from CNS to muscles and glands.
  • Interneurons connect neurons within the CNS.

Q4. Explain the structure and functions of the brain.

  • Hindbrain: medulla, pons, cerebellum – vital functions and balance.
  • Midbrain: visual and auditory reflexes.
  • Forebrain: thalamus, hypothalamus, limbic system, cerebrum.
  • Cerebral lobes and their functions.
  • Left and right hemispheres; corpus callosum.

Q5. Explain the role of the endocrine system in behaviour.

  • Glands release hormones into the bloodstream.
  • Pituitary controls growth and other glands.
  • Thyroid: too little thyroxine causes slowness; too much causes restlessness.
  • Adrenal: adrenaline prepares the body for emergency.
  • Gonads: sexual behaviour and secondary sexual characters.
  • Hormones influence emotions, stress and personality.

Sensation, Attention and Perception

Quick summary

We know the world through our senses. Sensation is the first step, in which sense organs receive stimuli. Attention selects some stimuli from many. Perception is the process of organising and interpreting sensations to give them meaning. Perception is affected by Gestalt principles, past experience, expectations and needs, and it can sometimes go wrong, as in illusions.

Key points

  • Sensation (संवेदना) is the detection of physical energy (light, sound, pressure) by sense organs and its conversion into nerve impulses (transduction).
  • Absolute threshold: the minimum intensity of a stimulus that can be detected 50% of the time.
  • Difference threshold (JND): the smallest change in a stimulus that can be noticed. Weber's law: the JND is a constant proportion of the original stimulus.
  • Sensory adaptation: decreased sensitivity to a constant stimulus (e.g. not noticing a smell after some time).
  • Attention is the focusing of consciousness on certain stimuli. It is selective.
  • External factors of attention: intensity, size, change, movement, novelty, repetition, contrast.
  • Internal factors of attention: interest, motives, needs, mental set, emotions.
  • Perception gives meaning to sensations. It depends on both the stimulus (bottom-up) and our knowledge and expectations (top-down).
  • Gestalt principles of organisation: figure–ground, proximity, similarity, continuity, closure.
  • Depth perception uses binocular cues (retinal disparity, convergence) and monocular cues (relative size, interposition, linear perspective, texture gradient).

Important terms

  • Stimulus – any energy change that affects a sense organ.
  • Span of attention – the number of objects that can be grasped in one brief look (about 7 ± 2 items, from Miller's work on short-term memory).
  • Division of attention – attending to two tasks at a time; easier when one is automatic.
  • Fluctuation of attention – attention shifts back and forth even when we try to focus.
  • Perceptual constancy – objects seem to have constant size, shape and colour despite changes in the image on the retina.
  • Illusion – a false or wrong perception of an actual stimulus, e.g. Müller-Lyer illusion.
  • Hallucination – perception without any stimulus; seen in some mental disorders.

Important thinkers and theories

  • Weber's law: ΔI / I = k, where I is the original stimulus intensity, ΔI is the JND and k is a constant.
  • Gestalt psychologists: Wertheimer, Köhler and Koffka.
  • Phi phenomenon (Wertheimer): illusion of movement when lights flash one after another, as in neon signs.
  • Classical senses: vision, hearing, smell, taste, touch (skin senses); also kinesthetic and vestibular (balance) senses.

5 important questions

Q1. Distinguish between sensation and perception.

Sensation is the simple reception of a stimulus by a sense organ. Perception is the interpretation of that sensation, giving it meaning based on experience.

Q2. What is an illusion? Give one example.

An illusion is a misperception of a real stimulus. In the Müller-Lyer illusion, two equal lines look unequal because of inward and outward arrowheads.

Q3. Explain the determinants (factors) of attention.

  • External: intensity, size, movement, change, novelty, repetition, contrast.
  • Internal: interest, needs and motives, mental set, emotional state, habit.
  • Example: advertisements use bright colours and movement.

Q4. Describe the Gestalt principles of perceptual organisation.

  • Figure–ground: we see an object against a background.
  • Proximity: nearby items are grouped.
  • Similarity: similar items are grouped.
  • Continuity: we see smooth continuous patterns.
  • Closure: we fill gaps to see complete figures.
  • "The whole is different from the sum of its parts."

Q5. Explain depth perception and its cues.

  • Seeing the world in three dimensions and judging distance.
  • Binocular cues: retinal disparity, convergence.
  • Monocular cues: relative size, interposition (overlap), linear perspective (railway lines meet), texture gradient, light and shadow, motion parallax.
  • Helps in driving, sports, daily movement.

Exam tip

Draw small sketches for Gestalt principles and the Müller-Lyer illusion. Learn the definitions of absolute threshold, JND and Weber's law exactly.

Quick summary

Consciousness is our awareness of ourselves and our surroundings. It changes through the day: we are alert, relaxed, drowsy, asleep or dreaming. Sleep has stages that repeat in cycles, and dreams occur mostly in REM sleep. Psychologists also study altered states like hypnosis and meditation.

Key points

  • Consciousness (चेतना) – awareness of inner thoughts, feelings and the outside world. William James called it a continuous "stream of consciousness".
  • Levels (Freud): conscious, preconscious (can be recalled easily) and unconscious.
  • Altered states of consciousness: sleep, dreams, hypnosis, meditation, and drug-induced states.
  • Circadian rhythm – the body's roughly 24-hour cycle of sleep and wakefulness, controlled by the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus and the hormone melatonin.
  • Sleep is studied with the EEG (electroencephalograph), which records brain waves.
  • NREM sleep has stages (N1 light sleep, N2 with sleep spindles, N3 deep slow-wave/delta sleep).
  • REM sleep (rapid eye movement) – the brain is active, the eyes move quickly, body muscles are relaxed (paralysed); most vivid dreams occur here. It is also called paradoxical sleep.
  • One sleep cycle lasts about 90 minutes; we pass through 4–6 cycles a night, and REM periods get longer towards morning.
  • Functions of sleep: body repair, energy saving, memory consolidation, brain growth in children.
  • Sleep disorders: insomnia (difficulty sleeping), narcolepsy (sudden sleep attacks), sleep apnoea (breathing stops), sleepwalking (somnambulism), night terrors.
  • Hypnosis – a state of focused attention and high suggestibility. Meditation – training attention to achieve calm awareness; reduces stress.

Important terms

  • Alpha waves – brain waves of relaxed wakefulness.
  • Delta waves – slow, large waves of deep sleep.
  • Manifest content – the dream as remembered; latent content – its hidden meaning (Freud).
  • Lucid dream – a dream in which one knows one is dreaming.
  • REM rebound – more REM sleep after a period of REM deprivation.

Important thinkers and theories

Theory of dreamsThinkerMain idea
Wish-fulfilmentSigmund Freud (The Interpretation of Dreams, 1900)Dreams are disguised fulfilment of unconscious wishes; "royal road to the unconscious"
Activation–synthesisJ. Allan Hobson and Robert McCarley (1977)Brain makes a story out of random neural firing in REM sleep
Information-processingVariousDreams help sort and store the day's memories
Problem-solvingRosalind CartwrightDreams help work through emotional concerns
  • Eugene Aserinsky and Nathaniel Kleitman discovered REM sleep in 1953.

5 important questions

Q1. What is REM sleep?

REM (rapid eye movement) sleep is the stage in which the eyes move quickly, brain activity is like waking, and muscles are relaxed. Most vivid dreams happen in REM sleep.

Q2. What is circadian rhythm?

It is the natural 24-hour cycle of sleep, wakefulness, body temperature and hormones. It is controlled by the hypothalamus and the hormone melatonin and is disturbed by jet lag and night shifts.

Q3. Describe the stages of sleep.

  • Awake relaxed state with alpha waves.
  • NREM N1, N2 (sleep spindles), N3 (delta waves, deep sleep).
  • REM sleep with dreams.
  • 90-minute cycles, 4–6 per night; deep sleep early, more REM later.

Q4. Explain the theories of dreams.

  • Freud's wish-fulfilment: manifest and latent content, dream work.
  • Activation–synthesis theory (Hobson and McCarley).
  • Information-processing and memory consolidation view.
  • Evaluate: modern research supports links between dreams, emotion and memory.

Q5. Write a note on sleep disorders.

  • Insomnia: causes (stress, poor habits) and effects.
  • Narcolepsy, sleep apnoea, sleepwalking, night terrors – one line each.
  • Good sleep habits (sleep hygiene): fixed timing, less screen time at night, no caffeine late, exercise.

Exam tip

Draw a simple line diagram of one 90-minute sleep cycle (Awake → N1 → N2 → N3 → N2 → REM) in your answer; it saves words and impresses the examiner.

Quick summary

Learning is a relatively permanent change in behaviour that results from practice or experience. Psychologists have explained learning through classical conditioning (Pavlov), operant conditioning (Skinner), trial-and-error (Thorndike), insight learning (Köhler) and observational learning (Bandura). These theories are used in teaching, parenting and therapy.

Key points

  • Learning (अध्ययन) is a relatively permanent change in behaviour due to experience. Changes due to maturation, fatigue, illness or drugs are not learning.
  • Classical conditioning (Ivan Pavlov, Russian physiologist): a neutral stimulus (bell) paired with food comes to produce salivation in a dog.
  • Operant (instrumental) conditioning (B.F. Skinner): behaviour is controlled by its consequences. Skinner used the Skinner box with rats and pigeons.
  • Reinforcement increases behaviour; punishment decreases behaviour.
  • Trial-and-error learning (E.L. Thorndike): a hungry cat in a puzzle box learned to escape by gradually reducing errors.
  • Thorndike's laws: law of effect, law of exercise and law of readiness.
  • Insight learning (Wolfgang Köhler): the chimpanzee Sultan suddenly joined two sticks to reach a banana — a sudden understanding of the whole situation.
  • Observational learning / modelling (Albert Bandura): learning by watching others. The Bobo doll experiment showed children copy aggression.
  • Factors affecting learning: motivation, maturation, method of learning, health, interest and environment.

Important terms

  • Unconditioned stimulus (UCS) – naturally produces a response (food).
  • Unconditioned response (UCR) – natural response (salivation to food).
  • Conditioned stimulus (CS) – originally neutral stimulus (bell) that produces a response after pairing.
  • Conditioned response (CR) – learned response (salivation to bell).
  • Extinction – weakening of a learned response when reinforcement stops.
  • Spontaneous recovery – reappearance of an extinguished response after rest.
  • Generalisation – responding to stimuli similar to the CS; discrimination – responding only to the CS.
  • Positive reinforcement – adding a pleasant stimulus; negative reinforcement – removing an unpleasant stimulus. Both increase behaviour.

  • Schedules of reinforcement: continuous; partial – fixed ratio, variable ratio, fixed interval, variable interval. Variable ratio gives behaviour most resistant to extinction.
  • Bandura's steps of observational learning: attention, retention, reproduction, motivation.

5 important questions

Q1. Define learning.

Learning is a relatively permanent change in behaviour that occurs as a result of practice or experience.

Q2. What is negative reinforcement?

Negative reinforcement strengthens a behaviour by removing an unpleasant stimulus, e.g. taking a pill to remove a headache increases pill-taking when in pain.

Q3. Explain Pavlov's classical conditioning.

  • Before: food (UCS) → salivation (UCR); bell → no salivation.
  • During: bell (CS) given just before food, many times.
  • After: bell alone → salivation (CR).
  • Concepts: extinction, spontaneous recovery, generalisation, discrimination.
  • Uses: explaining fears and phobias, and their treatment.

Q4. Explain Skinner's operant conditioning.

  • Behaviour is shaped by consequences.
  • Skinner box: rat presses lever, gets food; lever pressing increases.
  • Positive and negative reinforcement; punishment.
  • Shaping by rewarding small steps.
  • Schedules of reinforcement.
  • Uses: classroom rewards, behaviour modification.

Q5. Explain Köhler's insight learning.

  • Gestalt view: learning by understanding the whole problem.
  • Experiments with chimpanzee Sultan: stick problem and box problem.
  • Solution appears suddenly ("aha" experience).
  • Learned solutions are remembered and transferred to new problems.
  • Contrast with trial and error.

Exam tip

Memory and Forgetting

Quick summary

Memory is the ability to take in, store and later bring back information. It works in three stages: encoding, storage and retrieval. The Atkinson–Shiffrin model describes three memory stores: sensory, short-term and long-term memory. Forgetting is the failure to recall information, and it is explained by decay, interference, retrieval failure and motivated forgetting.

Key points

  • Memory (स्मृती) has three processes: encoding (putting information in), storage (keeping it) and retrieval (getting it back).
  • Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968) gave the multi-store (information processing) model.
  • Sensory memory holds information for a very short time: about 1 second for visual (iconic) and a few seconds for auditory (echoic) memory.
  • Short-term memory (STM) holds about 7 ± 2 items (George Miller, 1956) for about 15–30 seconds without rehearsal.
  • Chunking (grouping items into meaningful units) increases STM capacity, e.g. remembering a mobile number in groups.
  • Long-term memory (LTM) has very large capacity and can last a lifetime.
  • LTM types: explicit (declarative) – episodic and semantic; implicit (non-declarative) – procedural skills like cycling.
  • Hermann Ebbinghaus studied memory using nonsense syllables (like ZOK, BIQ) and drew the forgetting curve: forgetting is fast in the first hours and then slows down.
  • Methods of measuring retention: recall, recognition, relearning (savings) and reconstruction.

Important terms

  • Rehearsal – repeating information to keep it in STM or transfer it to LTM.
  • Episodic memory – memory of personal events (your first day in college).
  • Semantic memory – memory of general facts and meanings (capital of India).
  • Procedural memory – memory of how to do things (typing, swimming).
  • Proactive interference – old learning disturbs recall of new learning.
  • Retroactive interference – new learning disturbs recall of old learning.
  • Amnesia – loss of memory, usually due to brain injury or disease; retrograde (past events) or anterograde (new events).
  • Mnemonics – memory aids, e.g. VIBGYOR for rainbow colours.

Important thinkers and theories

Theory of forgettingMain idea
Decay (trace decay)Memory traces fade with time if not used
InterferenceOther learning blocks recall (proactive and retroactive)
Retrieval failure (cue-dependent)Information is stored but the right cue is missing; "tip-of-the-tongue"
Motivated forgetting / repression (Freud)Painful memories are pushed into the unconscious
Organic causesBrain injury, ageing, diseases like Alzheimer's
  • Levels of processing (Craik and Lockhart, 1972): deeper, meaningful processing leads to better memory.
  • Serial position effect: items at the beginning (primacy) and end (recency) of a list are remembered better.

5 important questions

Q1. What is chunking?

Chunking is grouping separate pieces of information into larger meaningful units, so that more information can be held in short-term memory.

Q2. Distinguish between proactive and retroactive interference.

In proactive interference, earlier learning disturbs recall of new material. In retroactive interference, new learning disturbs recall of earlier material.

Q3. Explain the Atkinson–Shiffrin model of memory.

  • Information enters sensory memory (very brief, large capacity).
  • Attention moves it to short-term memory (7 ± 2 items, about 20 seconds).
  • Rehearsal and encoding transfer it to long-term memory.
  • Retrieval brings information back from LTM to STM.
  • Diagram: three boxes with arrows for attention, rehearsal, retrieval.

Q4. Explain the causes (theories) of forgetting.

  • Decay due to disuse.
  • Interference: proactive and retroactive.
  • Retrieval failure due to lack of cues.
  • Repression of unpleasant memories.
  • Brain damage and amnesia.
  • Ebbinghaus forgetting curve as evidence.

Q5. Suggest methods to improve memory.

  • Understand meaning; deep processing.
  • Spaced (distributed) practice instead of cramming.
  • Rehearsal and self-testing (recall practice).
  • Chunking, mnemonics, visual imagery.
  • Proper sleep, good health, low stress.
  • Overlearning and revision before the exam.

Exam tip

Draw the three-store model diagram and describe the forgetting curve in words. "Methods to improve memory" is a popular practical question — link it to your own study habits.

Quick summary

Thinking is the mental handling of ideas, images and symbols to understand, decide and solve problems. Concepts are the building blocks of thought. Reasoning may be deductive or inductive. Problem solving moves through stages and uses strategies like algorithms and heuristics, but obstacles such as mental set and functional fixedness can block it.

Key points

  • Thinking (विचारप्रक्रिया) – a higher cognitive process of manipulating mental representations (images, concepts, symbols, language).
  • Elements of thought: images, concepts, symbols, language and propositions.
  • Concept – a mental category grouping objects, events or ideas with common features (fruit, democracy). A prototype is the best example of a concept (sparrow for "bird").
  • Types of thinking: convergent (one correct answer) and divergent (many possible answers – linked to creativity); also critical, creative, reflective and autistic (fantasy) thinking.
  • Reasoning: deductive – from general rule to specific conclusion (All men are mortal; Ram is a man; so Ram is mortal). Inductive – from specific cases to a general rule.
  • Stages of problem solving: identify and define the problem → gather information/prepare → generate possible solutions → evaluate and choose → implement → check the result.
  • Strategies: trial and error, algorithm (step-by-step method that guarantees a solution), heuristic (rule of thumb – quick but not guaranteed, e.g. means–end analysis, working backwards), and insight (sudden "aha!" understanding – Köhler).
  • Obstacles: mental set (sticking to an old method), functional fixedness (seeing an object only in its usual use – Duncker's candle problem), confirmation bias, lack of motivation, emotional stress.
  • Decision making is choosing among alternatives; heuristics like availability and representativeness can lead to errors (Tversky and Kahneman).

Important terms

  • Cognition – all mental activities of knowing: perceiving, remembering, thinking.
  • Means–end analysis – breaking a big problem into smaller sub-goals.
  • Availability heuristic – judging likelihood by how easily examples come to mind.
  • Representativeness heuristic – judging by similarity to a typical case.
  • Incubation – a rest period after which a solution suddenly appears.

5 important questions

Q1. What is a concept?

A concept is a mental category that groups things having common features, such as "vehicle" or "honesty". Concepts make thinking quick and organised.

Q2. Differentiate between an algorithm and a heuristic.

An algorithm is a fixed step-by-step procedure that always gives the right answer but can be slow. A heuristic is a short-cut rule of thumb that is fast but may fail.

Q3. Explain the stages of problem solving.

  • Define the problem clearly.
  • Prepare: collect facts.
  • Produce possible solutions (brainstorm).
  • Evaluate and select the best one.
  • Act and verify; revise if needed.
  • Give a daily-life example (choosing a career or fixing a budget).

Q4. Describe the obstacles to problem solving.

  • Mental set: Luchins' water-jar study.
  • Functional fixedness: Duncker's candle problem (box used as a shelf).
  • Confirmation bias, fear of failure, poor motivation, too much anxiety.
  • Ways to overcome: incubation, brainstorming, looking at the problem from new angles.

Q5. Explain deductive and inductive reasoning with examples.

  • Define each; give a syllogism for deduction.
  • Inductive: observing many cases and forming a rule (every crow seen is black → all crows are black).
  • Strengths and errors of each.
  • Use in science: induction forms hypotheses, deduction tests them.

Exam tip

Name the classic experiment with each obstacle — Luchins for mental set and Duncker for functional fixedness — it turns an ordinary answer into a high-scoring one.

Motivation and Emotion

Quick summary

Motivation is the inner force that starts, directs and keeps up goal-directed behaviour. Motives may be biological (hunger, thirst) or social and learned (achievement, affiliation, power). Emotion is a complex feeling state with physical changes, inner feelings and outward expression. Theories like Maslow's need hierarchy explain motivation, and the James–Lange, Cannon–Bard and Schachter–Singer theories explain emotion.

Key points

  • The word motivation comes from the Latin movere, "to move". Motivation (प्रेरणा) energises and directs behaviour.
  • Motivational cycle: need → drive → goal-directed behaviour → goal → reduction of drive.
  • Biological (primary) motives: hunger, thirst, sleep, sex, need for oxygen, avoidance of pain. They help survival and homeostasis.
  • Social (secondary) motives: learned from society — achievement (nAch), affiliation, power, approval.
  • David McClelland studied the achievement motive, often measured with the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT).
  • Intrinsic motivation comes from interest in the task itself; extrinsic motivation comes from rewards like money or marks.
  • Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs (from bottom): physiological, safety, love and belongingness, esteem, self-actualisation.
  • Emotion (भावना) has three parts: physiological arousal, subjective feeling and expressive behaviour.
  • During strong emotion, the sympathetic nervous system increases heart rate, breathing and blood sugar; the adrenal glands release adrenaline.
  • Paul Ekman found some basic emotions with universal facial expressions: happiness, sadness, anger, fear, surprise and disgust.

Important terms

  • Need – a state of lack or deficiency.
  • Drive – the aroused state that pushes the organism to act.
  • Incentive – an external goal or reward that attracts behaviour.
  • Homeostasis – the body's tendency to keep a balanced internal state.
  • Frustration – the feeling when a goal is blocked.
  • Conflict – a state when two or more motives clash.
  • Emotional intelligence – the ability to understand and manage one's own and others' emotions (Salovey and Mayer; popularised by Daniel Goleman).

Important thinkers and theories

Theory of emotionMain idea
James–Lange theoryBodily changes come first; feeling emotion is the perception of these changes ("we feel afraid because we tremble")
Cannon–Bard theoryThe thalamus sends signals at the same time to the cortex (feeling) and body (arousal)
Schachter–Singer two-factor theoryEmotion = physiological arousal + cognitive label of that arousal
  • Kurt Lewin's types of conflict: approach–approach, avoidance–avoidance, approach–avoidance (and double approach–avoidance).
  • The lie detector (polygraph) records heart rate, breathing and skin conductance (GSR) during emotion.

5 important questions

Q1. Define motivation.

Motivation is the process that starts, directs and sustains goal-directed behaviour, arising from needs, drives and incentives.

Q2. What is an approach–avoidance conflict?

It is a conflict in which one goal has both attractive and unattractive features, e.g. wanting a well-paid job that is very far from home.

Q3. Explain Maslow's hierarchy of needs.

  • Physiological needs: food, water, sleep.
  • Safety needs: security, shelter, stability.
  • Love and belongingness: family, friends.
  • Esteem needs: respect, recognition, achievement.
  • Self-actualisation: realising one's full potential.
  • Lower needs must be met first; drawn as a pyramid.

Q4. Distinguish between biological and social motives with examples.

  • Biological: inborn, universal, survival-related; hunger, thirst, sleep, sex.
  • Social: learned, differ across cultures; achievement, affiliation, power.
  • Biological motives are linked to homeostasis and the hypothalamus.
  • Social motives develop through upbringing and society.
  • Both together shape behaviour.

Q5. Explain the James–Lange and Cannon–Bard theories of emotion.

  • James–Lange: stimulus → bodily change → feeling.
  • Example: we see a snake, tremble, then feel fear.
  • Cannon–Bard criticism: bodily changes are similar in many emotions and too slow.
  • Cannon–Bard: thalamus sends signals to cortex and body at the same time.
  • Feeling and bodily arousal occur together.

Exam tip

Draw Maslow's pyramid and the motivational cycle. In emotion theories, show the order of events with arrows for each theory — examiners like the comparison.

Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability to recognise, understand, use and manage emotions in oneself and in others. The idea was given by Salovey and Mayer (1990) and made popular by Daniel Goleman (1995). EI helps in relationships, studies, work and mental health, and unlike IQ it can be improved with practice.

Key points

  • Emotional intelligence (भावनिक बुद्धिमत्ता) – the capacity to perceive, understand, use and regulate emotions effectively.
  • Peter Salovey and John Mayer (1990) first defined EI scientifically.
  • Daniel Goleman's book Emotional Intelligence (1995) made the concept popular; he claimed EI can matter as much as IQ for success.
  • EQ (emotional quotient) is a popular term for a measured level of EI.
  • Mayer–Salovey four-branch model: (1) perceiving emotions, (2) using emotions to aid thinking, (3) understanding emotions, (4) managing emotions.
  • Goleman's five components: self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills.
  • Bar-On proposed a mixed model and the Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i).
  • Gardner's intrapersonal and interpersonal intelligences are early forms of the same idea.
  • Characteristics of a person high in EI: knows own feelings, controls anger, stays calm under stress, understands others, communicates well, resolves conflict.
  • Importance: better relationships, academic achievement, leadership, teamwork, lower stress and better mental health.
  • Developing EI: noting and naming feelings, pausing before reacting, deep breathing, active listening, seeing others' viewpoint, social-emotional learning programmes in schools.

Important terms

  • Self-awareness – knowing one's own emotions, strengths and weaknesses.
  • Self-regulation – controlling impulses and moods.
  • Empathy – feeling and understanding what another person feels.
  • Social skills – managing relationships, persuasion, cooperation.
  • Ability model – EI as a set of mental abilities measured by performance tests (MSCEIT).
  • Mixed model – EI combined with personality traits (Goleman, Bar-On).

Intelligence

IQ = (MA ÷ CA) × 100 = (9 ÷ 12) × 100 = 75. हे मूल सरासरीपेक्षा कमी गटात येते.

Quick summary

Intelligence is the general mental ability to learn from experience, think rationally, solve problems and adapt to the environment. Psychologists have proposed different theories, from Spearman's single general factor to Gardner's multiple intelligences. Intelligence is measured using tests that give an Intelligence Quotient (IQ). Both heredity and environment affect intelligence.

Key points

  • David Wechsler defined intelligence as the global capacity of a person to act purposefully, think rationally and deal effectively with the environment.
  • Alfred Binet and Theodore Simon made the first intelligence test in 1905 in France to identify children needing special help.
  • Binet introduced the idea of Mental Age (MA). William Stern proposed the IQ ratio. Lewis Terman revised the test as the Stanford–Binet test (1916) and multiplied by 100.
  • Spearman's two-factor theory: a general factor (g) common to all tasks and specific factors (s).
  • Thurstone: seven Primary Mental Abilities – verbal comprehension, word fluency, number, space, memory, perceptual speed and reasoning.
  • Guilford's Structure of Intellect model classifies abilities by operations, contents and products.
  • Cattell: fluid intelligence (reasoning in new situations) and crystallised intelligence (knowledge from experience).
  • Howard Gardner's multiple intelligences (1983): seven intelligences – linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, musical, bodily-kinaesthetic, interpersonal and intrapersonal. Gardner added an eighth, naturalistic intelligence, in 1999.
  • Robert Sternberg's triarchic theory: analytical (componential), creative (experiential) and practical (contextual) intelligence.
  • Twin and adoption studies show that both heredity and environment (nutrition, schooling, family, culture) influence intelligence.

Important terms

  • Mental Age (MA) – the level of mental ability compared with the average child of that age.
  • Chronological Age (CA) – actual age in years.
  • IQ – a score showing a person's intelligence relative to others.
  • Verbal test – needs language; non-verbal / performance test – uses pictures, blocks or puzzles (useful for illiterate people).
  • Individual test – given to one person at a time; group test – to many at once.
  • Intellectual disability – significantly below-average intelligence (IQ below about 70) with problems in adaptive behaviour.
  • Giftedness – very high ability, usually IQ above about 130.

Important thinkers and theories

  • Ratio IQ formula: IQ = (MA ÷ CA) × 100.
  • Modern tests (like the Wechsler scales: WAIS for adults, WISC for children) use deviation IQ with mean 100 and standard deviation 15.
  • Example: MA = 12 years, CA = 10 years → IQ = (12 ÷ 10) × 100 = 120.
  • Raven's Progressive Matrices is a well-known non-verbal test.
IQ range (common classification)Category
Above 130Very superior / gifted
110–129Above average
90–109Average
70–89Below average / borderline
Below 70Intellectual disability

5 important questions

Q1. Calculate the IQ of a child whose mental age is 9 years and chronological age is 12 years.

IQ = (MA ÷ CA) × 100 = (9 ÷ 12) × 100 = 75. The child is below average.

Q2. What is Spearman's g factor?

It is the general intelligence factor that is common to all mental tasks, according to Spearman's two-factor theory.

Q3. Explain Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences.

  • Intelligence is not one ability but several independent ones.
  • Linguistic (poets), logical-mathematical (scientists), spatial (architects).
  • Musical, bodily-kinaesthetic (dancers, athletes).
  • Interpersonal (understanding others), intrapersonal (understanding self).
  • Naturalistic (recognising plants, animals).
  • Use in education: teaching to different strengths.

Q4. Describe the types of intelligence tests.

  • Individual tests: Stanford–Binet, Wechsler scales.
  • Group tests: used in schools, army, recruitment.
  • Verbal tests: vocabulary, analogies.
  • Non-verbal/performance tests: block design, matrices.
  • Merits and limits of each; cultural bias.

Q5. Explain the role of heredity and environment in intelligence.

  • Twin studies: identical twins show higher IQ similarity.
  • Adoption studies: children's IQ relates to both biological and adoptive parents.
  • Environment: nutrition, education, home stimulation, socio-economic status.
  • Interaction view: heredity sets limits, environment decides how far one develops.

Exam tip

Practise at least two IQ calculations. Learn names with theories as pairs (Spearman–g, Thurstone–PMA, Gardner–MI, Sternberg–triarchic).

Creativity

Quick summary

Creativity is the ability to produce ideas or products that are both new (original) and useful. It depends on divergent thinking. Graham Wallas described four stages of the creative process, and Guilford and Torrance gave tests to measure it. Creativity and intelligence are related but not the same, and creativity can be encouraged at home and school.

Key points

  • Creativity (सर्जनशीलता) – producing something novel and appropriate (useful, valuable) in art, science, business or daily life.
  • J. P. Guilford (1950) linked creativity with divergent thinking, which has four features: fluency (many ideas), flexibility (different kinds of ideas), originality (rare, unusual ideas) and elaboration (adding details).
  • Graham Wallas (1926) – stages of the creative process: (1) preparation – collecting information, (2) incubation – the problem rests in the mind, (3) illumination – sudden insight ("aha!"), (4) verification – testing and refining.
  • Characteristics of creative people: curiosity, independence, openness to experience, tolerance of ambiguity, risk-taking, persistence, sense of humour, intrinsic motivation.
  • Creativity and intelligence: a minimum level of intelligence (IQ around 120, threshold theory) is needed, but beyond that, high IQ does not guarantee high creativity.
  • Measurement: Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking (TTCT) – verbal and figural tasks such as unusual uses of a brick, picture completion; Guilford's alternate uses test. In India, Baqer Mehdi's verbal and non-verbal creativity tests are well known.
  • Factors that encourage creativity: freedom, appreciation, a rich environment, open-ended questions, play, intrinsic motivation.
  • Blocks to creativity: fear of failure, rigid rules, rote learning, criticism, conformity, too much time pressure.
  • Teresa Amabile showed that intrinsic motivation boosts creativity and external rewards can reduce it.

Important terms

  • Divergent thinking – producing many possible answers to an open problem.
  • Convergent thinking – finding one correct answer.
  • Brainstorming – group method of producing ideas without criticism (Alex Osborn).
  • Incubation – unconscious working on a problem during rest.
  • Originality – statistical rarity of an idea.

5 important questions

Q1. Define creativity.

Creativity is the ability to produce ideas, solutions or products that are new, original and useful.

Q2. What are the features of divergent thinking?

Fluency, flexibility, originality and elaboration, as described by J. P. Guilford.

Q3. Explain Wallas's stages of the creative process.

  • Preparation: study and collect information.
  • Incubation: stop working consciously; mind works in the background.
  • Illumination: sudden solution (Archimedes' "Eureka").
  • Verification: test, correct and complete the idea.

Q4. Discuss the relationship between creativity and intelligence.

  • Different processes: convergent (IQ tests) vs divergent (creativity tests).
  • Threshold theory: some intelligence needed, but not sufficient.
  • Getzels and Jackson (1962) found that highly creative and highly intelligent students were often different groups.
  • Conclude: both should be developed.

Q5. How can teachers and parents foster creativity?

  • Ask open-ended questions; accept unusual answers.
  • Give freedom, time and materials; encourage hobbies and play.
  • Praise effort and ideas, not only marks.
  • Avoid harsh criticism and over-control.
  • Use brainstorming, projects and problem-based learning.

Introduction to Psychological Testing

Quick summary

A psychological test is a standardised and objective tool for measuring a sample of behaviour, such as intelligence, aptitude, interest or personality. A good test must be reliable, valid, standardised and have norms. Tests are used in education, clinics, industry and research, but they must be used ethically and by trained people.

Key points

  • Psychological test (मानसशास्त्रीय चाचणी) – "an objective and standardised measure of a sample of behaviour" (Anne Anastasi).
  • History: Francis Galton (individual differences, 1880s); J. McKeen Cattell coined "mental test" (1890); Binet and Simon made the first intelligence test (1905); army tests Alpha and Beta in World War I.
  • Characteristics of a good test: objectivity, reliability (consistency), validity (measures what it claims), norms (standards for comparing scores) and standardisation (uniform procedure for giving and scoring).
  • Types by number of people: individual tests (one person at a time, e.g. Stanford–Binet) and group tests.
  • Types by material: verbal, non-verbal (e.g. Raven's Progressive Matrices) and performance tests (e.g. Koh's Block Design).
  • Types by purpose: intelligence, aptitude, achievement, interest, attitude, personality tests.
  • Speed tests (time limit important) vs power tests (items get harder; enough time given).
  • Uses: selection and placement, educational and vocational guidance, clinical diagnosis, research, self-understanding.
  • Limitations: cultural bias, test anxiety, misuse of labels, measures only a sample of behaviour.
  • Ethics: informed consent, confidentiality, use by qualified persons, careful reporting of results.

Important terms

  • Raw score – the number of correct answers before conversion.
  • Norms – average performance of a representative group, used to interpret a raw score (age norms, percentile norms).
  • Reliability – consistency of scores on repeated testing.
  • Validity – accuracy: the extent to which a test measures what it intends to measure.
  • Standardisation sample – the large representative group on whom norms are prepared.
  • Aptitude – potential to learn a skill; achievement – what has already been learned.

5 important questions

Q1. Define a psychological test.

According to Anastasi, a psychological test is essentially an objective and standardised measure of a sample of behaviour.

Q2. What are norms?

Norms are the typical scores of a representative group. They help us interpret an individual's raw score, for example as above or below average for his age.

Q3. Explain the characteristics of a good psychological test.

  • Objectivity in scoring.
  • Reliability – consistency over time and items.
  • Validity – measures the intended trait.
  • Norms and standardised administration.
  • Practicability: cost, time, ease of scoring.

Q4. Classify psychological tests.

  • On administration: individual and group.
  • On material: verbal, non-verbal, performance.
  • On purpose: intelligence, aptitude, achievement, interest, personality.
  • On time: speed and power.
  • Give one example of each.

Q5. Discuss the uses and limitations of psychological tests.

  • Uses in schools (guidance), industry (selection), clinics (diagnosis), research, defence.
  • Limitations: cultural bias, faking, test anxiety, misuse and labelling.
  • Ethical guidelines for using tests.

Exam tip

Quick summary

Personality is the unique and relatively stable pattern of thoughts, feelings and behaviour of a person. Psychologists explain it through type theories, trait theories, psychoanalytic theory (Freud), humanistic theories (Rogers, Maslow) and others. Personality is assessed using self-report inventories, projective tests and behavioural methods.

Key points

  • The word personality comes from the Latin persona, the mask worn by actors in Roman theatre.
  • Gordon Allport defined personality as the dynamic organisation within the individual of those psychophysical systems that determine his unique adjustments to the environment.
  • Personality (व्यक्तिमत्त्व) is unique, fairly consistent, and shaped by heredity and environment.
  • Type theories put people into categories. Hippocrates (four humours: sanguine, phlegmatic, choleric, melancholic). Sheldon (body types: endomorph, mesomorph, ectomorph). Carl Jung (introvert and extrovert).
  • Trait theories describe personality using traits. Allport (cardinal, central, secondary traits); Cattell (16 source traits, 16PF test); Eysenck (extraversion–introversion, neuroticism, later psychoticism).
  • Big Five model (McCrae and Costa): Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, Neuroticism (OCEAN).
  • Freud's psychoanalytic theory: three levels of mind (conscious, preconscious, unconscious) and three structures (id, ego, superego).
  • Freud's psychosexual stages: oral, anal, phallic, latency, genital.
  • Defence mechanisms protect the ego from anxiety: repression, denial, projection, rationalisation, displacement, regression, sublimation.
  • Carl Rogers: self-concept; ideal self vs real self; unconditional positive regard. Maslow: self-actualisation.

Important terms

  • Trait – a stable tendency to behave in a certain way (e.g. honesty).
  • Id – the inborn part that works on the pleasure principle.
  • Ego – the rational part that works on the reality principle.
  • Superego – the moral part (conscience), from parents and society.
  • Introvert – reserved, inward-looking; extrovert – sociable, outgoing.
  • Self-concept – the way a person sees himself or herself.

Important thinkers and theories

Assessment methodExamples
Self-report inventoriesMMPI, 16PF (Cattell), Eysenck Personality Questionnaire, NEO-PI (Big Five)
Projective testsRorschach inkblot test, Thematic Apperception Test (TAT – Murray and Morgan), sentence completion, word association
Behavioural methodsInterview, observation, rating scales, situational tests
  • Projective tests assume that people project their hidden feelings onto ambiguous (unclear) stimuli.
  • Rorschach test uses 10 inkblot cards.

5 important questions

Q1. Define personality.

Personality is the unique and relatively stable pattern of a person's thoughts, feelings and behaviour that makes him or her different from others.

Q2. What are defence mechanisms? Give two examples.

They are unconscious methods used by the ego to reduce anxiety, e.g. rationalisation (giving a reasonable-sounding excuse) and projection (blaming others for one's own faults).

Q3. Explain Freud's structure of personality.

  • Id: instincts, pleasure principle, unconscious.
  • Ego: reality principle, balances id and superego.
  • Superego: morality, ideals, guilt.
  • Conflict among them causes anxiety.
  • Ego uses defence mechanisms.
  • Levels of mind: conscious, preconscious, unconscious (iceberg).

Q4. Describe type and trait approaches to personality.

  • Type: Hippocrates' humours, Sheldon's body types, Jung's introvert–extrovert.
  • Limitations of types: oversimplified.
  • Trait: Allport's cardinal/central/secondary traits.
  • Cattell's 16 factors; Eysenck's dimensions.
  • Big Five (OCEAN) is widely accepted today.

Q5. Explain projective tests of personality.

  • Based on the idea of projecting unconscious feelings.
  • Rorschach inkblot test: 10 cards; responses scored for location, content, determinants.
  • TAT: pictures; person tells a story.
  • Sentence completion and word association tests.
  • Merits: reveal hidden motives; limits: scoring is subjective, need trained experts.

Exam tip

Use an iceberg diagram for Freud's levels of mind and a short table comparing type and trait theories. Remember OCEAN for the Big Five.

Quick summary

Personality assessment means measuring a person's typical traits, motives and ways of behaving. Psychologists use self-report inventories, projective tests, behavioural observation, interviews and rating scales. Each method has strengths and weaknesses, so a complete picture usually needs more than one method.

Key points

  • Personality assessment (व्यक्तिमत्त्व मापन) is used in clinical diagnosis, counselling, selection of employees and research.
  • MMPI (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory; Hathaway and McKinley, 1943) – clinical use; the MMPI-2 has 567 items.
  • 16PF (Raymond Cattell) – measures 16 source traits.
  • EPQ (Eysenck Personality Questionnaire) – extraversion, neuroticism, psychoticism.
  • NEO-PI (Costa and McCrae) – the Big Five traits.
  • Self-report inventories (questionnaires): the person answers many statements about himself (yes/no or agree/disagree).
  • Rorschach Inkblot Test (Hermann Rorschach, 1921) – 10 inkblot cards.
  • TAT – Thematic Apperception Test (Henry Murray and Christiana Morgan, 1935) – make up stories about pictures.
  • Sentence completion, word association, Draw-a-Person test.
  • Projective techniques – ambiguous stimuli on which the person "projects" hidden needs and conflicts (based on psychoanalytic ideas):
  • Behavioural assessment: direct observation, behaviour rating, situational tests (e.g. leaderless group discussion used in SSB defence selection).
  • Interview – structured or unstructured face-to-face conversation.
  • Rating scales – others (teachers, supervisors) rate the person on traits.
  • Problems: faking good, social desirability, response sets, subjectivity in projective scoring, halo effect in ratings.

Important terms

  • Inventory – a standardised questionnaire about one's own behaviour and feelings.
  • Projection – attributing one's own unconscious feelings to others or to ambiguous stimuli.
  • Social desirability – tendency to give answers that look good.
  • Halo effect – rating a person high on all traits because of one good trait.
  • Situational test – observing behaviour in a staged real-life situation.

5 important questions

Q1. What is a projective test?

A projective test presents ambiguous material, like inkblots or vague pictures. The person's responses are believed to reveal unconscious needs, feelings and conflicts. Example: Rorschach, TAT.

Q2. What does the MMPI measure?

The MMPI is a self-report inventory used mainly to identify psychological disorders such as depression, paranoia and schizophrenia. It also has validity scales to detect lying.

Q3. Describe self-report inventories with merits and demerits.

  • Meaning and examples: MMPI, 16PF, EPQ, NEO-PI.
  • Merits: objective scoring, quick, group use, norms available.
  • Demerits: faking, social desirability, needs reading ability, limited self-insight.

Q4. Explain the Rorschach and TAT tests.
