Weathering and Erosion

Quick summary

Weathering is the breaking down of rocks at or near the earth's surface, in the same place, by weather and living things. Erosion is the removal and carrying away of this broken material by agents such as running water, wind, glaciers, waves and groundwater. Together they slowly lower and shape the land (denudation).

Key points

  • Weathering (अपक्षय) is in situ: the rock breaks but does not move.
  • Erosion involves movement of rock material by an agent.
  • Denudation = weathering + mass wasting + erosion + transportation. These are exogenic (external) processes.
  • There are three types of weathering: physical (mechanical), chemical and biological.
  • Physical weathering is common in hot deserts and cold regions, where temperature changes are large.
  • Chemical weathering is fastest in hot and humid regions, because heat and water speed up chemical reactions.
  • Factors affecting weathering: climate, rock type and structure, slope, vegetation and time.
  • Mass wasting (mass movement) is the downslope movement of weathered material under gravity: landslides, rock fall, soil creep, mudflow. Landslides are common in the Western Ghats during the monsoon.
  • Weathering is useful: it forms soil, concentrates some ores (e.g. bauxite, iron ore) and prepares material for erosion.

Important terms

  • Exfoliation – peeling off of rock surfaces in curved sheets due to repeated heating and cooling ("onion weathering").
  • Frost action (frost wedging) – water freezes in cracks, expands by about 9% and splits the rock.
  • Block disintegration – rocks break into rectangular blocks along joints.
  • Oxidation – reaction of minerals with oxygen; iron-rich rocks turn reddish (rusting).
  • Carbonation – carbonic acid (rainwater + CO₂) dissolves limestone.
  • Hydration – minerals absorb water and swell, weakening the rock.
  • Solution – soluble minerals dissolve in water.

Key facts

Type of weatheringProcessesTypical region
PhysicalExfoliation, block and granular disintegration, frost action, salt crystal growthHot deserts, cold mountains
ChemicalOxidation, carbonation, hydration, hydrolysis, solutionHot humid (equatorial, monsoon)
BiologicalPlant roots, burrowing animals, lichens, human activityEverywhere
  • Carbonation reaction: CO₂ + H₂O → H₂CO₃ (carbonic acid); H₂CO₃ + CaCO₃ → Ca(HCO₃)₂ (soluble).
  • Laterite soil, common in the Konkan and Sahyadri, forms by intense chemical weathering (leaching) in hot, wet conditions.
  • Agents of erosion: running water (most important on land), wind (deserts), glaciers (high mountains and polar areas), sea waves (coasts), groundwater (limestone areas).

5 important questions

Q1. Distinguish between weathering and erosion.

Weathering is the breaking of rocks in their original place without movement. Erosion is the wearing away and removal of rock material by moving agents like water, wind or ice.

Q2. What is exfoliation?

It is the peeling off of outer rock layers in curved sheets, caused by repeated expansion during the day and contraction at night, mainly in hot deserts.

Q3. Explain the types of physical weathering.

  • Caused mainly by temperature change, frost and pressure release.
  • Exfoliation in hot deserts.
  • Block disintegration along joints.
  • Granular disintegration in coarse-grained rocks like granite.
  • Frost wedging in cold regions.
  • Salt weathering in dry and coastal areas.

Q4. Describe chemical weathering processes.

  • Oxidation: iron minerals react with oxygen, rock becomes red/brown.
  • Carbonation: carbonic acid dissolves limestone, forming caves.
  • Hydration: minerals absorb water and swell.
  • Hydrolysis: water reacts with minerals like feldspar to form clay.
  • Solution: salts dissolve in water.
  • Most active in hot and humid climates.

Q5. Explain the factors that affect weathering.

  • Climate: temperature and rainfall decide type and speed.
  • Rock type: soft or soluble rocks weather quickly.
  • Rock structure: joints and cracks allow water to enter.
  • Slope: steep slopes expose fresh rock.
  • Vegetation: roots split rocks, humus adds acids.
  • Time: longer exposure, more weathering.

Exam tip

Use a three-column table (physical, chemical, biological) in long answers. Always write the carbonation equation — it shows clear understanding.

Work of Rivers and Fluvial Landforms

Quick summary

Running water is the most important agent shaping the land surface. A river erodes its bed and banks, carries the eroded material and deposits it where its speed falls. In this way it forms valleys, gorges, waterfalls, meanders, flood plains and deltas, which change from the upper to the lower course.

Key points

  • A river erodes by hydraulic action (force of water), abrasion / corrasion (rubbing with rock load), attrition (load pieces breaking each other) and solution / corrosion (dissolving rocks such as limestone).
  • It transports load by traction (rolling), saltation (jumping), suspension (fine silt and clay floating) and solution (dissolved minerals).
  • The river works in three courses: upper (youth) – mainly vertical erosion; middle (mature) – lateral erosion and transport; lower (old) – deposition.
  • Erosional landforms: V-shaped valley, gorge, canyon, interlocking spurs, rapids, waterfalls, potholes.
  • A gorge is a deep, narrow valley with steep sides (Indus, Sutlej and Brahmaputra gorges in the Himalayas); a canyon is a very deep gorge in dry areas (Grand Canyon of the Colorado River, USA).
  • Waterfalls form where a river falls over hard rock or a steep slope, e.g. Dhuandhar on the Narmada (Bhedaghat), Jog Falls on the Sharavati, Angel Falls (Venezuela, the highest in the world).
  • Depositional landforms: alluvial fan, meanders, ox-bow lake, flood plain, natural levees, braided channels, delta.
  • An ox-bow lake forms when the neck of a meander is cut off.
  • A delta forms at the mouth when a river deposits load faster than waves and tides can remove it. The Ganga–Brahmaputra delta (Sundarbans) is the largest in the world.
  • Rivers with strong tides at the mouth form estuaries instead of deltas, e.g. Narmada and Tapi.
  • Drainage patterns: dendritic (tree-like, Ganga plain), trellis (folded areas), radial (from a central high point, e.g. Amarkantak), rectangular (jointed rocks), centripetal (into a basin, e.g. Loktak lake).

Important terms

  • Base level – the lowest level to which a river can erode, usually sea level.
  • Meander (नागमोडी वळण) – a loop-like bend of a river in its middle or lower course.
  • Flood plain – flat land beside a river built by flood deposits.
  • Levee – a raised bank of deposits along a river channel.
  • Distributary – a branch that flows away from the main river, mainly in a delta.
  • Pothole – a round hollow drilled in the river bed by swirling pebbles.

Key facts

CourseMain workLandforms
Upper (youth)Vertical erosionV-valley, gorge, waterfall, rapids, potholes
Middle (mature)Lateral erosion, transportWider valley, meanders, alluvial fan
Lower (old)DepositionFlood plain, levees, ox-bow lake, delta, estuary
  • W. M. Davis (1899) described the cycle of erosion: youth → maturity → old age, ending in a nearly flat peneplain.

5 important questions

Q1. What is an ox-bow lake?

A crescent-shaped lake formed when a river cuts across the narrow neck of a meander and leaves the old bend separated from the main channel.

Q2. Why do the Narmada and Tapi form estuaries and not deltas?

They flow through narrow rift valleys over hard rock, carry less sediment, and enter the Arabian Sea where tides are strong and wash the sediment away.

Q3. Describe the erosional landforms of a river.

  • Processes: hydraulic action, abrasion, attrition, solution.
  • V-shaped valley, gorge and canyon (examples).
  • Waterfalls and rapids: formation on hard and soft rock bands (examples).
  • Potholes, interlocking spurs.
  • Diagrams of a V-valley and a waterfall.

Q4. Explain the depositional landforms of a river with diagrams.

  • Causes of deposition: fall in slope and speed, more load.
  • Alluvial fan, meanders and ox-bow lake, flood plain and levees.
  • Delta: conditions, types (arcuate – Nile, bird's-foot – Mississippi, estuarine), Indian example.
  • Importance: fertile soil, dense population, agriculture.

Q5. Explain the work of a river in its three courses.

  • Upper course: steep slope, high speed, vertical erosion, landforms.
  • Middle course: lateral erosion, meandering, transport.
  • Lower course: gentle slope, deposition, flood plains, delta.
  • Link with Davis's cycle of erosion; a long profile diagram.

Exam tip

Always give one Indian example for each landform (Dhuandhar falls, Sundarbans delta, Narmada estuary); this lifts an ordinary answer.

Quick summary

Besides rivers, three other agents shape the land: wind in deserts, glaciers in cold mountains and high latitudes, and underground water in limestone areas. Each erodes rock and deposits material in its own way, producing typical landforms such as sand dunes, U-shaped valleys and limestone caves.

Key points

  • Wind works best in dry areas with loose sand and little vegetation. It erodes by deflation (blowing away loose particles), abrasion (sand-blasting rock) and attrition.
  • Wind erosion landforms: deflation hollows (Qattara Depression, Egypt), mushroom / pedestal rocks, zeugen, yardangs, inselbergs and ventifacts.
  • Wind deposition landforms: sand dunes – barchans (crescent-shaped, horns pointing downwind), seif or longitudinal dunes – and loess (fine yellow dust; Loess Plateau of China). India's Thar desert has many barchans.
  • A glacier (हिमनदी) is a slowly moving mass of ice. It erodes by plucking (pulling out rock blocks) and abrasion (scraping with rock fragments in the ice).
  • Glacial erosion landforms: cirque (corrie), arête (sharp ridge), horn (pyramid peak, e.g. Matterhorn), U-shaped valley, hanging valley and fjord (drowned glacial valley, Norway).
  • Glacial deposition landforms: moraines (lateral, medial, terminal, ground), drumlins, eskers and outwash plains. Indian glaciers: Siachen, Gangotri (source of the Bhagirathi).
  • Underground water dissolves limestone and forms karst topography, named after the Karst region of Slovenia–Croatia.
  • Karst erosion: lapies (grooved surface), sinkholes, swallow holes, caves and natural bridges.
  • Karst deposition: stalactites hang from cave roofs, stalagmites rise from the floor; when they join they form pillars. Indian caves: Borra Caves (Andhra Pradesh), Mawsmai (Meghalaya), Kutumsar (Chhattisgarh).

Important terms

  • Deflation – removal of loose dust and sand by wind.
  • Barchan – a crescent-shaped sand dune.
  • Cirque – an armchair-shaped hollow at the head of a glacial valley.
  • Moraine (हिमोढ) – an unsorted heap of rock debris deposited by a glacier.
  • Fjord – a long, deep, narrow coastal inlet formed by a drowned glacial valley.
  • Karst – a landscape of limestone shaped by solution.

5 important questions

Q1. Distinguish between stalactites and stalagmites.

Stalactites are icicle-like deposits of calcium carbonate hanging from the roof of a limestone cave; stalagmites grow upward from the cave floor where the water drops fall.

Q2. What is a hanging valley?

A small tributary glacial valley left high above the floor of the main, more deeply eroded U-shaped valley; rivers often fall from it as waterfalls.

  • Conditions for wind action.
  • Processes: deflation, abrasion, attrition.
  • Erosional landforms with examples.
  • Depositional landforms: types of dunes, loess.
  • Diagrams of a mushroom rock and a barchan.

Q4. Explain the landforms formed by glaciers.

  • Meaning and types of glaciers (valley, continental).
  • Erosion: plucking, abrasion; cirque, arête, horn, U-valley, hanging valley, fjord.
  • Deposition: moraines, drumlins, eskers, outwash plain.
  • Indian and world examples; diagrams.

Q5. What is karst topography? Describe its landforms.

  • Conditions: thick, jointed limestone, enough rainfall, water table below surface.
  • Erosional and depositional features.
  • Examples in India and the world.
  • Human importance: tourism, water supply, problems of building on sinkholes.

Exam tip

For every agent, write the answer in two parts – erosional and depositional landforms – with one diagram each. This structure fits every long question.

Quick summary

The atmosphere is the layer of gases that surrounds the earth and is held by gravity. It contains gases, water vapour and dust particles. On the basis of temperature, it is divided into the troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere and exosphere.

Key points

  • The atmosphere (वातावरण) protects life, keeps the earth warm, gives oxygen for breathing and carbon dioxide for plants.
  • Nitrogen (about 78%) and oxygen (about 21%) make up about 99% of dry air by volume.
  • Argon is about 0.93%. Carbon dioxide is a small share (about 0.04%) but very important for the greenhouse effect.
  • Water vapour varies from almost 0 to about 4% and is mostly found in the lower atmosphere. It gives rise to clouds and rain.
  • Dust particles act as nuclei on which water vapour condenses.
  • About half of the mass of the atmosphere lies below about 5.5 km.
  • Ozone is concentrated in the stratosphere (about 15–35 km) and absorbs harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun.
  • In the troposphere, temperature falls with height at about 6.5°C per 1,000 m (normal lapse rate).
  • All weather (clouds, rain, storms) happens in the troposphere.

Important terms

  • Troposphere – lowest layer; about 8 km thick at the poles and about 18 km at the equator.
  • Tropopause – the boundary between troposphere and stratosphere.
  • Stratosphere – layer above the troposphere, up to about 50 km; contains the ozone layer; good for jet planes because it is calm.
  • Mesosphere – up to about 80 km; temperature falls with height; meteors burn here; coldest layer.
  • Thermosphere (ionosphere) – above 80 km; temperature rises with height; ionised layers reflect radio waves; auroras occur here.
  • Exosphere – outermost layer, very thin air, merges with outer space.
  • Greenhouse gases – gases like CO₂, methane and water vapour that trap heat.

Key facts

GasApprox. volume in dry air
Nitrogen (N₂)78.08%
Oxygen (O₂)20.95%
Argon (Ar)0.93%
Carbon dioxide (CO₂)about 0.04%
Others (neon, helium, methane, ozone, hydrogen etc.)traces
LayerApprox. heightTemperature trend
Troposphere0 to 8–18 kmDecreases with height
StratosphereUp to about 50 kmIncreases (due to ozone)
Mesosphere50–80 kmDecreases
Thermosphere80 km to about 400–600 kmIncreases sharply
ExosphereBeyondVery thin air
  • The Montreal Protocol (1987) was signed to phase out ozone-depleting substances such as CFCs.

5 important questions

Q1. Why is the troposphere called the "weather layer"?

Because almost all water vapour and dust are found in it, so clouds, rain, storms and other weather events take place in this layer.

Q2. What is the importance of the ozone layer?

The ozone layer in the stratosphere absorbs most of the harmful ultraviolet radiation of the sun and protects living beings from skin cancer, eye damage and crop harm.

Q3. Describe the composition of the atmosphere.

  • Gases: nitrogen, oxygen, argon, CO₂ and trace gases.
  • Role of each: oxygen for breathing, CO₂ for photosynthesis and warmth, nitrogen dilutes oxygen.
  • Water vapour: source of all precipitation, absorbs heat.
  • Dust particles: condensation nuclei, scatter sunlight (red sky at sunrise/sunset).
  • Composition is fairly uniform up to about 80 km (homosphere).

Q4. Explain the structure (layers) of the atmosphere with a diagram.

  • Troposphere: weather, lapse rate, thickest at equator.
  • Stratosphere: ozone layer, temperature rises, calm air.
  • Mesosphere: coldest, meteors burn.
  • Thermosphere/ionosphere: radio waves reflected, auroras.
  • Exosphere: outer limit.
  • Diagram: vertical bars with heights, layer names and temperature line.

Q5. Explain the importance of the atmosphere.

  • Gives oxygen and CO₂ needed for life.
  • Keeps temperature suitable through the greenhouse effect.
  • Blocks ultraviolet rays and burns meteors.
  • Carries water vapour and brings rain.
  • Helps radio communication through the ionosphere.

Exam tip

A labelled diagram of atmospheric layers with heights and a temperature curve is expected in long answers. Remember the troposphere height difference: about 8 km at poles, about 18 km at the equator.

Insolation and Temperature

  • Insolation = Incoming solar radiation (येणारे सौर प्रारण).

Quick summary

Insolation is the energy received by the earth from the sun. It heats the earth's surface, and the surface then heats the air. The amount of insolation and the temperature of a place depend on latitude, land and water, altitude, ocean currents and other factors. The balance between incoming and outgoing energy is called the heat budget.

Key points

  • Insolation = Incoming solar radiation. The sun's energy reaches the earth as short waves.
  • The earth gives out heat as long waves (terrestrial radiation). The atmosphere is heated mainly by this terrestrial radiation, not directly by the sun.
  • So the atmosphere is heated from below.
  • The atmosphere is heated by conduction, convection, advection (horizontal movement of air) and radiation.
  • Insolation is highest near the tropics and lowest near the poles.
  • Factors affecting insolation: angle of the sun's rays, length of day, transparency of the atmosphere, and distance from the sun.
  • Factors affecting temperature: latitude, altitude, distance from the sea, ocean currents, winds, cloud cover and land relief.
  • The earth is nearest to the sun around 3 January (perihelion) and farthest around 4 July (aphelion); this has only a small effect on temperature.
  • Isotherms are lines joining places of equal temperature. They generally run east–west, bending over land and sea.

Important terms

  • Albedo – the share of insolation reflected back by a surface (snow has high albedo).
  • Heat budget – the balance between insolation received and heat lost by the earth, which keeps its average temperature steady.
  • Lapse rate – fall of temperature with height, about 6.5°C per 1,000 m.
  • Temperature inversion – a condition in which temperature increases with height instead of falling, e.g. on calm, clear winter nights in valleys.
  • Range of temperature – difference between maximum and minimum temperature (daily or annual).
  • Greenhouse effect – trapping of long-wave heat by gases like CO₂ and water vapour.

Key facts

  • Heat budget (as commonly given in textbooks): of 100 units of insolation, about 35 units are reflected back to space (the earth's albedo), and about 65 units are absorbed by the earth and atmosphere. All 65 units are finally radiated back, so the earth does not get warmer or cooler overall.
  • Land heats and cools faster than water. So coastal places (like Mumbai) have a small annual range, while interior places (like Nagpur) have a large range — an example of continentality.
  • Hill stations such as Mahabaleshwar are cooler because of altitude.
  • Warm ocean currents raise coastal temperature; cold currents lower it.

5 important questions

Q1. What is insolation?

Insolation is the solar energy received by the earth's surface, mainly as short-wave radiation.

Q2. Why is the atmosphere said to be heated from below?

Because short-wave solar rays pass through air with little heating; the earth absorbs them and radiates long waves, which heat the air from the bottom upwards.

Q3. Explain the factors affecting the distribution of temperature.

  • Latitude: vertical rays near the equator, slanting rays near poles.
  • Altitude: temperature falls with height.
  • Distance from sea: maritime vs continental climate.
  • Ocean currents: warm and cold currents.
  • Winds: e.g. warm loo winds in north India.
  • Relief and slope: sun-facing slopes are warmer.
  • Cloud cover and vegetation.

Q4. Explain the heat budget of the earth.

  • Earth receives 100 units of insolation.
  • About 35 units reflected (albedo) by clouds, snow and surface.
  • About 65 units absorbed (part by atmosphere, larger part by earth surface).
  • Earth radiates heat as long waves; atmosphere absorbs and re-radiates.
  • Outgoing radiation equals incoming, so average temperature stays constant.
  • Surplus near the equator, deficit near poles; balanced by winds and ocean currents.

Q5. What is temperature inversion? Explain its conditions and effects.

  • Temperature increases with height near the ground.
  • Conditions: long winter nights, clear sky, calm air, dry air, snow-covered ground.
  • Common in valleys and hilly areas.
  • Effects: fog formation, frost damage to crops, trapping of smoke and pollution (smog), poor visibility.

Exam tip

Use the "100 units" heat budget explanation and a sketch of isotherms. Give Indian contrasts (Mumbai vs Nagpur) to explain continentality.

Atmospheric Pressure and Winds

Quick summary

Atmospheric pressure is the weight of the column of air above a place. Pressure differs from place to place due to temperature and the earth's rotation. Air moves from high pressure to low pressure, and this moving air is called wind. Winds are classified as planetary, seasonal (periodic) and local winds.

Key points

  • Pressure is measured with a barometer (mercury or aneroid). The unit is the millibar (mb) or hectopascal (hPa).
  • Average sea-level pressure is about 1013.25 mb.
  • Pressure decreases with height, roughly 1 mb for every 10 m near the surface.
  • Isobars are lines on a map joining places of equal pressure.
  • There are seven pressure belts: the equatorial low, two sub-tropical highs (about 30° N and S), two sub-polar lows (about 60° N and S) and two polar highs.
  • The equatorial low and polar highs are thermal in origin; the sub-tropical highs and sub-polar lows are dynamic (caused by the earth's rotation and air movement).
  • Pressure belts shift about 5° north and south with the apparent movement of the sun.
  • Coriolis force, due to the earth's rotation, deflects winds to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere (Ferrel's Law).
  • The pressure gradient (difference of pressure over distance) decides wind speed. Close isobars mean strong winds.
  • The Indian monsoon is an example of seasonal winds (वारे) caused by unequal heating of land and sea.

Important terms

  • Planetary (permanent) winds – blow throughout the year between pressure belts: trade winds, westerlies, polar easterlies.
  • Trade winds – blow from sub-tropical highs towards the equator; north-east trades and south-east trades.
  • Westerlies – blow from sub-tropical highs towards sub-polar lows; stronger in the Southern Hemisphere ("Roaring Forties", "Furious Fifties", "Shrieking Sixties").
  • Doldrums – calm belt near the equator.
  • Horse latitudes – calm belts of sub-tropical high pressure.
  • Land and sea breeze – daily local winds near coasts.
  • Cyclone – low-pressure system with winds blowing inward, anticlockwise in the Northern Hemisphere.
  • Anticyclone – high-pressure system with winds blowing outward, clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere.

Key facts

  • Buys Ballot's Law: in the Northern Hemisphere, if you stand with your back to the wind, low pressure is on your left.
  • Tropical cyclones are called hurricanes (Atlantic), typhoons (western Pacific) and cyclones (Indian Ocean).

5 important questions

Q1. Define isobars.

Isobars are lines drawn on a map joining places having equal atmospheric pressure, reduced to sea level.

Q2. What is the Coriolis force?

It is the apparent force caused by the rotation of the earth that deflects moving air to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere.

Q3. Describe the pressure belts of the earth.

  • Equatorial low (0°–5°): heated air rises; doldrums.
  • Sub-tropical highs (about 30°): air sinks; horse latitudes; hot deserts.
  • Sub-polar lows (about 60°): air rises due to rotation and meeting of air masses.
  • Polar highs (90°): very cold, dense air.
  • Thermal vs dynamic origin.
  • Seasonal shifting with the sun.

Q4. Explain planetary winds.

  • Trade winds: 30° to equator; NE trades and SE trades; steady.
  • Westerlies: 30° to 60°; from south-west in NH and north-west in SH; variable in NH, strong in SH.
  • Polar easterlies: polar highs to sub-polar lows; cold.
  • All are deflected by Coriolis force.
  • Diagram of pressure belts and winds.

Q5. Explain land breeze and sea breeze.

  • Caused by unequal heating of land and water.
  • Day: land heats faster, low pressure on land; sea breeze blows from sea to land.
  • Night: land cools faster, high pressure on land; land breeze blows from land to sea.
  • Moderates coastal temperature (e.g. Mumbai).
  • Fishermen use land breeze to sail out early morning.

Exam tip

Draw the diagram of pressure belts and planetary winds on a circle — it answers many questions at once. Remember the deflection rule: right in NH, left in SH.

Humidity and Precipitation

Quick summary

Humidity is the amount of water vapour in the air. When moist air cools to its dew point, the vapour condenses into tiny water drops, forming dew, fog and clouds. When these drops or ice crystals become heavy and fall to the earth, it is called precipitation. Rainfall is of three types: convectional, orographic and cyclonic.

Key points

  • Water vapour enters the air by evaporation and transpiration.
  • Warm air can hold more water vapour than cold air.
  • Saturation: when air holds the maximum vapour it can at a given temperature.
  • Dew point: the temperature at which air becomes saturated. Cooling below it causes condensation.
  • Condensation needs hygroscopic nuclei (dust, salt, smoke particles).
  • Forms of condensation: dew, frost, fog, mist and clouds.
  • Forms of precipitation (वृष्टी): rain, snow, sleet, hail and drizzle.
  • Humidity is measured with a hygrometer (wet and dry bulb thermometer). Rainfall is measured with a rain gauge, in millimetres.
  • Mumbai and the Konkan coast get heavy orographic rain from the south-west monsoon on the windward side of the Sahyadris; places on the leeward side (e.g. parts of Marathwada) lie in a rain-shadow area.

Important terms

  • Absolute humidity – actual mass of water vapour in a given volume of air (g/m³).
  • Specific humidity – mass of water vapour per unit mass of air (g/kg).
  • Relative humidity – actual vapour present compared with the maximum the air can hold at that temperature, in percent.
  • Fog – condensation near the ground that reduces visibility below 1 km; mist has more moisture and visibility is better.
  • Isohyets – lines on a map joining places of equal rainfall.
  • Rain-shadow area – the leeward side of a mountain that receives little rain.

Key facts

  • Relative humidity (RH) = (actual water vapour ÷ water vapour capacity at that temperature) × 100.
  • If the air temperature rises and the vapour stays the same, RH falls; if temperature falls, RH rises.

Orographic (relief)Moist wind forced up a mountainWestern Ghats, Himalayas
Cyclonic (frontal)Warm air rises over cold air at fronts or in cyclonesTemperate regions; cyclones on Indian coasts

5 important questions

Q1. Define relative humidity.

Relative humidity is the ratio of the actual amount of water vapour in the air to the maximum amount it can hold at that temperature, expressed as a percentage.

Q2. What is dew point?

It is the temperature at which air becomes saturated with water vapour, so that further cooling leads to condensation.

Q3. Explain the forms of condensation.

  • Dew: drops on cool surfaces when dew point is above freezing.
  • Frost: ice crystals when dew point is below 0°C.
  • Fog and mist: condensation in air near the ground.
  • Clouds: condensation at height around dust nuclei.
  • Conditions: clear sky, calm air, long nights.

Q4. Describe the types of rainfall with diagrams.

  • Convectional: strong heating, rising air, cumulonimbus clouds, daily afternoon rain.
  • Orographic: windward slope gets heavy rain, leeward side is rain shadow (Mumbai vs Pune).
  • Cyclonic: warm and cold air masses meet; warm air rises along the front.
  • One labelled diagram for each.

Q5. Explain the importance of humidity and precipitation.

  • Source of fresh water for drinking, farming and industry.
  • Indian agriculture depends heavily on monsoon rainfall.
  • Humidity affects human comfort and evaporation.
  • Clouds and vapour control the earth's heat balance.
  • Rain fills rivers, dams and groundwater.

Exam tip

Orographic rain is a favourite question. Use the Sahyadri example: heavy rain on the Konkan side, much less on the Deccan side, with a labelled diagram of windward and leeward slopes.

Air Masses, Fronts and Cyclones

Quick summary

An air mass is a huge body of air with nearly the same temperature and humidity throughout. When two different air masses meet, the boundary between them is called a front. Fronts and low-pressure systems give rise to cyclones – tropical cyclones over warm seas and temperate cyclones in the middle latitudes – which bring much of the world's stormy weather.

Key points

  • An air mass (वायुराशी) takes on the qualities of its source region – a large, uniform surface such as an ocean, a desert or a snowfield.
  • Classification (Bergeron): c = continental (dry), m = maritime (moist), P = polar (cold), T = tropical (warm), A = arctic. Main types: cP, mP, cT, mT.
  • A front is the sloping boundary zone between two air masses. Its formation is frontogenesis.
  • Cold front: cold air pushes under warm air; steep slope; short heavy rain and thunderstorms. Warm front: warm air rises gently over cold air; gentle slope; long steady rain. Occluded front: the cold front overtakes the warm front. Stationary front: neither air mass moves forward.
  • A cyclone is a low-pressure system with winds blowing inward, anticlockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere.
  • Tropical cyclones form over warm oceans (surface water above about 26–27 °C) between about 5° and 20° latitude. They do not form at the equator because the Coriolis force there is almost zero.
  • A tropical cyclone has a calm, cloud-free eye at the centre surrounded by the eye wall of strongest winds and rain. It weakens over land because the supply of moisture stops.
  • Local names: cyclone (Indian Ocean), hurricane (Atlantic and East Pacific), typhoon (West Pacific), willy-willy (old name, Australia).
  • Temperate cyclones form along the polar front where cold polar and warm tropical air meet (Bjerknes' polar front theory). They are large, move from west to east with the westerlies and bring cloudy, rainy weather.
  • Western disturbances – temperate lows from the Mediterranean region – bring winter rain to north-west India, useful for the rabi wheat crop.
  • An anticyclone is a high-pressure system with outward, clockwise winds in the Northern Hemisphere and clear, calm weather.

Important terms

  • Source region – the area where an air mass forms and gets its properties.
  • Front – the boundary between two contrasting air masses.
  • Eye – the calm low-pressure centre of a tropical cyclone.
  • Storm surge – a rise of sea water pushed onto the coast by cyclone winds.
  • Occlusion – the lifting of warm air off the ground when a cold front catches a warm front.

  • The Bay of Bengal gets more cyclones than the Arabian Sea. Examples: Odisha super cyclone (1999), Phailin (2013), Tauktae (Arabian Sea, 2021).

5 important questions

Q1. What is an air mass?

A large body of air, extending over hundreds of kilometres, with nearly uniform temperature and humidity at a given height, acquired from its source region.

Q2. Why do tropical cyclones not form at the equator?

Because the Coriolis force, needed to give the winds their spinning motion, is almost zero at the equator.

Q3. Describe the classification of air masses and their source regions.

  • Meaning of air mass and conditions of a source region.
  • Bergeron classification: c, m, P, T, A, E.
  • Types with source regions and weather (cP – Siberia, Canada; mT – tropical oceans; cT – Sahara; mP – North Atlantic).
  • Modification of air masses as they move.

Q4. Explain the origin, structure and effects of tropical cyclones.

  • Conditions: warm sea, Coriolis force, moist air, low wind shear, a pre-existing disturbance.
  • Structure: eye, eye wall, spiral rain bands; diagram.
  • Effects: strong winds, heavy rain, floods, storm surge, loss of life; Indian examples.
  • Warning and preparedness: IMD warnings, cyclone shelters, evacuation.

Q5. Explain the formation of a temperate cyclone with reference to fronts.

  • Polar front theory (Bjerknes).
  • Stages: stationary front, wave formation, warm and cold sectors, occlusion, dissipation.
  • Weather along warm and cold fronts.
  • Comparison with tropical cyclones (table).

Exam tip

Remember the wind direction rule: cyclone – anticlockwise in the north, clockwise in the south; anticyclone – the opposite. One wrong arrow in the diagram costs marks.

Ocean Floor Relief, Temperature and Salinity

Quick summary

The ocean floor is not flat. Like the land, it has plains, mountains, deep trenches and gentle slopes. Ocean water also differs from place to place in temperature and saltiness (salinity), and these properties control marine life, ocean currents and climate.

Key points

  • About 71% of the earth's surface is covered by oceans. The study of oceans is oceanography.
  • Continental shelf (खंडान्त उतार) – the gently sloping, shallow edge of a continent under the sea, usually up to about 200 m deep. It is rich in fish, oil and gas (e.g. Mumbai High).
  • Continental slope – the steeper slope from the shelf edge down to about 3,000 m; cut by submarine canyons.
  • Continental rise – a gentle slope of sediments at the foot of the slope.
  • Abyssal plain – the vast, flat deep-sea floor, about 3,000–6,000 m deep, covered with fine ooze.
  • Mid-oceanic ridges – long underwater mountain chains where new crust forms, e.g. the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
  • Ocean trenches – the deepest, narrow parts of the oceans, at subduction zones. The Mariana Trench (Challenger Deep, about 11,000 m) in the Pacific is the deepest.
  • Other features: seamounts (underwater volcanic peaks), guyots (flat-topped seamounts), coral reefs and atolls.
  • Temperature: surface water is warmest near the equator (about 26–30 °C) and coldest near the poles. It falls with depth: a warm mixed layer at the top, a thermocline where temperature drops fast, and cold deep water (about 2–4 °C).
  • Salinity is the total amount of dissolved salts in sea water. The average is about 35 parts per thousand (35‰), i.e. 35 g of salt in 1,000 g of water.
  • Salinity is highest around 20°–30° latitude (high evaporation, low rain), lower at the equator (heavy rain) and lowest near the poles (melting ice).
  • Inland and enclosed seas show extremes: the Red Sea is about 40‰; the Baltic Sea is very low; the Dead Sea is extremely salty (over 300‰). The Bay of Bengal is less salty than the Arabian Sea because of large river inflow.

Important terms

  • Continental shelf – shallow submerged edge of a continent.
  • Abyssal plain – flat deep-ocean floor.
  • Trench – long, narrow, very deep depression in the ocean floor.
  • Thermocline – the layer in which ocean temperature falls rapidly with depth.
  • Salinity (क्षारता) – amount of salt in grams per 1,000 g of sea water.
  • Isohaline – a line joining places of equal salinity.

Key facts

Continental shelf0–200 mShelf off Gujarat and Maharashtra
Continental slope200–3,000 mEdges of all continents
Abyssal plain3,000–6,000 mFloor of Atlantic and Pacific
Trench6,000–11,000 mMariana, Java (Sunda) Trench
  • Factors affecting salinity: evaporation, precipitation, river water, melting ice, winds and ocean currents.
  • Factors affecting temperature: latitude, depth, currents, winds, land–sea distribution.

5 important questions

Q1. What is a continental shelf? Why is it important?

It is the shallow, gently sloping part of the sea floor next to a continent (up to about 200 m). It is important for fishing, petroleum and natural gas, and sand and minerals.

Q2. Why is salinity lower at the equator than at the tropics?

Because the equator gets heavy daily rainfall and high humidity, which dilute sea water, while the tropics have clear skies, strong evaporation and little rain.

Q3. Describe the relief of the ocean floor with a diagram.

  • Continental shelf, slope and rise – features and importance.
  • Abyssal plain.
  • Mid-oceanic ridges and their link with sea-floor spreading.
  • Trenches, seamounts, guyots, coral reefs.
  • A labelled cross-section diagram.

Q4. Explain the distribution of temperature in the oceans.

  • Horizontal: decreases from equator to poles; effect of currents and winds.
  • Vertical: mixed layer, thermocline, deep layer.
  • Difference between Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
  • Importance for climate and marine life.

Q5. Discuss the factors and distribution of salinity of ocean water.

  • Meaning and average salinity.
  • Factors: evaporation, rainfall, rivers, ice, currents, winds.
  • Horizontal distribution by latitude; enclosed seas (Red Sea, Baltic, Dead Sea).
  • Vertical distribution; Indian examples (Arabian Sea vs Bay of Bengal).

Exam tip

Learn "average salinity 35‰" and the order shelf → slope → rise → abyssal plain → trench with depths; draw the cross-section in every relief answer.

Waves, Tides and Ocean Currents

Quick summary

Ocean water is always moving. Waves are up-and-down movements of the surface caused mainly by wind; tides are the regular rise and fall of sea level caused by the pull of the moon and the sun; ocean currents are large streams of water flowing in a fixed direction. These movements affect coasts, ports, fishing and climate.

Key points

  • Waves: wind transfers energy to the water surface. In a wave, water particles move in circles; only the energy moves forward. Parts: crest, trough, wave height, wavelength.
  • Tsunami – very long, fast waves caused by undersea earthquakes, volcanoes or landslides, e.g. the Indian Ocean tsunami of 26 December 2004.
  • Tides (भरती-ओहोटी) are caused by the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun and the earth's rotation. The moon's tide-producing force is a little more than twice that of the sun because it is much closer.
  • Most coasts get two high tides and two low tides in about 24 hours 50 minutes, so high tide comes about 50 minutes later each day.
  • Spring tides (very high high tides) occur on new moon and full moon days, when the sun, moon and earth are in a straight line.
  • Neap tides (low high tides) occur on the first and third quarter days, when the sun and moon pull at right angles.
  • The highest tidal range in the world is in the Bay of Fundy, Canada (about 15–16 m). In India, the Gulfs of Khambhat and Kachchh have high tidal ranges and tidal-power potential.
  • Ocean currents are caused by planetary winds, differences in temperature and density (salinity), the Coriolis force and the shape of coastlines.
  • Warm currents flow from the equator towards the poles; cold currents flow from the poles towards the equator.
  • In the northern Indian Ocean, currents reverse with the monsoon – clockwise in summer and anticlockwise in winter.
  • Where warm and cold currents meet, plankton grows and great fishing grounds develop: Grand Banks near Newfoundland (Gulf Stream + Labrador), seas near Japan (Kuroshio + Oyashio).

Important terms

  • Crest / trough – the highest / lowest point of a wave.
  • Tidal range – the difference between high-tide and low-tide levels.
  • Spring tide / neap tide – the highest / lowest tidal range in a lunar month.
  • Gyre – a large circular system of currents in an ocean basin.
  • Drift – a slow, wide surface current, e.g. North Atlantic Drift.

  • The North Atlantic Drift keeps the ports of Norway and the UK ice-free in winter; cold currents along west coasts help form deserts (Atacama, Namib).

5 important questions

Q1. What are spring tides?

Very high tides that occur on new-moon and full-moon days, when the sun, the moon and the earth are in a straight line and their pulls add up.

Q2. Why does high tide occur about 50 minutes later each day?

Because the moon moves forward in its orbit while the earth rotates, so a place takes about 24 hours 50 minutes to come back under the moon.

Q3. Explain the causes and types of tides.

  • Gravitational pull of moon and sun; centrifugal force; two bulges.
  • Daily pattern: semi-diurnal, diurnal, mixed tides.
  • Spring and neap tides with diagrams.
  • Importance: navigation, ports (Kolkata, Kandla), fishing, tidal energy, cleaning harbours.

Q4. Describe the factors that produce ocean currents.

  • Planetary winds (trades, westerlies).
  • Temperature and salinity differences (density).
  • Coriolis force (deflection right in north, left in south).
  • Shape of coasts and the sea floor.
  • Seasonal winds – monsoon currents of the Indian Ocean.

Q5. Describe the currents of the Atlantic Ocean and their effects.

  • North and South Equatorial currents, Gulf Stream, North Atlantic Drift, Canary, Labrador, Brazil, Benguela, Falkland.
  • Draw a map with arrows (warm red, cold blue).
  • Effects: climate of western Europe, fogs and fishing at Grand Banks, deserts on west coasts, navigation.

Exam tip

Use a mnemonic for currents and always mark warm and cold currents differently on maps; a neat map can carry a full long answer.
