Earth Movements

Quick summary

Landforms on the earth's surface are made and changed by internal and external forces. This chapter studies slow earth movements caused by internal forces (vertical and horizontal), folds and faults, and sudden movements — earthquakes and volcanoes.

Key points

  • Movements caused by internal (tectonic) forces are slow (mountain building, distribution of continents) or sudden (earthquakes, volcanoes).
  • Evidence of earth movements: after the 2004 tsunami the Sumatra coast rose a few centimetres; the three Himalayan ranges; a new island near Iceland in 1963; drowned forest remains near Mazgaon Dockyard, Mumbai. The Kachchh earthquake of 1819 raised about 1550 sq km of land, called "Allah's Bund".
  • Vertical (epeirogenic) movements: large parts of the crust rise or sink; continents and extensive plateaus form; slow but affect huge areas — continent-building.
  • Horizontal (orogenic) movements: tensional forces pull apart, creating cracks and faults — rift valleys and block mountains; compressional forces push together, creating folds — fold mountains (Himalayas, Alps, Rockies, Andes) — mountain-building.
  • Folds: the sides are limbs, divided by the axial plane. Raised centre — anticline; lowered centre — syncline. Types: symmetrical, asymmetrical, overturned, recumbent (axial plane almost horizontal), isoclinal.
  • Fold mountains are young (10–25 million years; Himalayas, Rockies — Mt Everest 8848 m) or old (Aravallis etc.).
  • Types of faults: normal (block slides down the fault plane), reverse (block thrust upward), tear/strike-slip (horizontal sliding), thrust (fault plane at less than 45°).
  • Earthquakes: the point inside the earth where energy is released is the focus; the point directly above it on the surface is the epicentre (maximum intensity). Seismographs record seismic waves. The Richter scale measures magnitude (logarithmic; a magnitude 5 quake releases about 32 times more energy than magnitude 4); the Mercalli scale measures intensity from effects.
  • Volcanoes: openings through which gases, lava and solid material are ejected from the upper mantle. Landforms: cinder cone (Mt Nuovo), composite cone (Mt St Helens), lava plateau (Deccan Trap), caldera (large deep depression), volcanic plug.
  • Volcanic belts: the Pacific "Ring of Fire" (Cotopaxi, Fujiyama, Mt St Helens), the Mid-Atlantic belt, the Mediterranean belt.

Important terms

  • Anticline / syncline – upfold / downfold of a fold.
  • Fault – a fracture in rocks along which blocks have moved.
  • Focus – point of origin of an earthquake inside the earth.
  • Epicentre – point on the surface directly above the focus.
  • Caldera – large depression left after a volcanic eruption.

Key facts

MovementForceLandform
VerticalUplift/subsidenceContinents, plateaus
Horizontal – tensionPulling apartFaults, rift valleys, block mountains
Horizontal – compressionPushing togetherFold mountains
SuddenSudden energy releaseEarthquakes, volcanoes

5 important questions

Q1. Distinguish between vertical and horizontal earth movements.

Vertical movements raise or lower the crust over large areas, forming continents and plateaus. Horizontal movements create tension or compression, producing faults and folds, and build mountains.

Q2. What are anticline and syncline?

In an anticline the centre of the fold is raised and the limbs slope down; in a syncline the centre is lower and the limbs slope towards each other.

Q3. Distinguish between focus and epicentre.

The focus is the point inside the earth where energy is released; the epicentre is the point on the surface directly above it, where intensity is greatest.

Q4. Give reasons: the Pacific coasts are called the "Ring of Fire".

Plate boundaries lie along the eastern and western Pacific coasts, so many active volcanoes (Cotopaxi, Fujiyama, Mt St Helens) are found there in a ring.

Q5. Name the landforms produced by volcanoes.

Cinder cone, composite cone, lava plateau (Deccan Trap), caldera and volcanic plug.

Exam tip

Practise drawing diagrams of the types of folds and faults.

Weathering and Mass Wasting

Quick summary

Rocks on the earth's surface break up or decay in place because of weather — this is weathering. Loose material then moves down slopes under gravity — this is mass wasting. This chapter covers the types of weathering, the factors affecting it, and the types of mass wasting.

Key points

  • Weathering is the breaking down (disintegration) or decay (decomposition) of rocks in place by temperature, water, plants and animals; the material is not carried away.
  • Granular weathering — minerals expand and contract at different rates with temperature, so grains come loose.
  • Block disintegration — jointed rocks like granite break along joints into blocks; common where the daily temperature range is high.
  • Shattering — in hot deserts rocks burst with a pistol-like sound.
  • Freeze–thaw weathering — water in cracks freezes, expands and splits rocks (cold regions).
  • Salt weathering — salt crystals in rocks expand and break them.
  • Exfoliation — rock layers peel off like onion skins.
  • Physical (mechanical) weathering — rocks break into smaller pieces without chemical change:
  • Chemical weathering — minerals react to form new compounds; effective and fast in humid climates. Processes: hydrolysis (reaction with water), solution (salts dissolve), oxidation (iron-bearing rocks rust — e.g. laterite in Konkan), carbonation (carbon dioxide dissolves limestone).
  • Biological weathering — plant roots grow in cracks and widen them; burrowing animals; human actions such as mining and quarrying.
  • Factors affecting weathering: rock type and structure, climate (temperature and rainfall), slope, vegetation. Physical weathering dominates in dry areas, chemical in humid areas.
  • Mass wasting — down-slope movement of soil, rock and debris under gravity, without a transporting medium like water, ice or wind. It depends on slope, rainfall, lack of vegetation and human interference.
  • Types: creep (very slow movement over years), earth flow (water-saturated soil on humid hillsides), mudflow, rock fall (rapid fall of rocks from a cliff), landslide (sliding of soil and rock on moderate to steep slopes; e.g. the Malin disaster, 2014).

Important terms

  • Weathering – breaking or decay of rocks in place.
  • Physical weathering – breaking of rocks without chemical change.
  • Chemical weathering – decomposition of rocks by chemical reactions.
  • Mass wasting – down-slope movement of loose material under gravity.
  • Landslide – sudden sliding of soil and rock down a slope.

Key facts

ClimateMain weathering
Hot desertGranular, block disintegration, shattering
Cold regionsFreeze–thaw
Hot and humidChemical weathering
Forested areasBiological weathering

5 important questions

Q1. Distinguish between physical and chemical weathering.

In physical weathering rocks only break into pieces with no chemical change; it is common in dry areas. In chemical weathering minerals react to form new compounds; it is common in humid areas.

Q2. Give reasons: temperature is the main factor behind granular weathering.

Different minerals in a rock expand and contract by different amounts with heat; large day–night temperature changes repeat this constantly, so grains come loose.

Q3. How does biological weathering take place?

Plant roots enter cracks, grow and push them wider; burrowing animals loosen rocks; human actions like mining and quarrying also break rocks.

Q4. What is mass wasting? Name its types.

Down-slope movement of soil, rock and debris by gravity without a transporting medium. Types: creep, earth flow, mudflow, rock fall and landslide.

Q5. Which type of weathering is common in Konkan, and why?

Konkan has heavy rain and a hot, humid climate, so chemical weathering (especially oxidation) dominates, producing laterite rock and red soil.

Exam tip

Link each type of weathering to its climate and give one example.

Agents of Erosion

Quick summary

Rivers, sea waves, wind, groundwater and glaciers are the agents of erosion. They detach weathered rock, lift it, carry it away and deposit it somewhere else. This creates erosional and depositional landforms. The chapter explains the processes and the landforms made by each agent.

Key points

  • Order of work of an agent: detach → lift → transport → deposit.
  • Erosion processes: plucking (glacier pulls out rock), abrasion (scraping with carried particles), attrition (carried pieces hit each other and become small and round), solution (limestone dissolves in water), deflation (wind blows away loose sand), drilling (whirling water makes pits in a riverbed).
  • River erosion types: vertical (downward) erosion deepens the bed; headward erosion cuts back towards the source; lateral erosion widens the valley.
  • Transport types: traction (heavy rocks roll and drag), saltation (particles bounce forward), suspension (fine particles float), solution (dissolved material).
  • Deposition starts when speed falls, slope changes or an obstacle comes; coarse material settles first, fine material last.
  • River: erosional – gorge/canyon (Ulhas, Narmada), V-shaped valley, waterfall (Jog on Sharavati, Chuliya on Chambal, Vena at Mahabaleshwar), plunge pool, potholes (Nighoj on the Kukadi). Depositional – alluvial fan, meanders, oxbow lake, floodplain, levees, delta.
  • A delta needs a large supply of sediment and a shallow sea; otherwise an estuary forms at the mouth.
  • Sea waves: erosional – sea cliff, sea cave, sea arch, sea stack, wave-cut platform. Depositional – beach (Diveagar, Guhagar; Marina, Chennai is India's longest), bar (Shrivardhan, Revdanda), spit, lagoon (Chilika, Vembanad).
  • Wind (strong in deserts): erosional – deflation hollow (Qattara Depression, Egypt), ventifact, mushroom rock, yardang. Depositional – sand dunes: barchan (crescent shape), seif (longitudinal) dunes; loess plains (north China, dust from the Gobi).
  • Groundwater (karst/limestone areas): sinkholes, caves (one in Meghalaya is about 23 km long); stalactites, stalagmites and pillars. In India: Meghalaya, Borra Caves (Andhra Pradesh), Kanhur plateau (Maharashtra).
  • Glacier: erosional – cirque, arête, horn (Matterhorn), U-shaped valley, hanging valley, roche moutonnée. Depositional – moraines (lateral, medial, ground, terminal), drumlins ("basket of eggs"), eskers, erratics.

Important terms

  • Erosion – wearing away of rock by an agent and removal of the material.
  • Deposition – laying down of carried material.
  • Pothole – deep pit drilled in a riverbed by whirling pebbles.
  • Oxbow lake – a horseshoe-shaped lake left when a meander is cut off.
  • Barchan – crescent-shaped dune, gentle slope facing the wind.
  • Loess – fine wind-blown dust deposited far from the desert.
  • Moraine – debris carried and deposited by a glacier.

GroundwaterSinkhole, caveStalactite, stalagmite, pillar
GlacierCirque, arête, horn, U-valley, roche moutonnéeMoraines, drumlins, eskers

5 important questions

Q1. Distinguish between abrasion and attrition.

In abrasion, particles carried by the agent rub and smooth the land surface. In attrition, the carried rock pieces strike each other and become smaller and rounder. Abrasion affects the surface; attrition affects the load.

Q2. Give reasons: Rivers on India's east coast form deltas, while those on the west coast form estuaries.

East-flowing rivers are long, carry a lot of silt and enter the shallow Bay of Bengal, so deltas form. West-flowing rivers are short and swift, carry less sediment and enter a deep sea near the coast, so estuaries form.

Q3. Distinguish between a U-shaped and a V-shaped valley.

A V-shaped valley is made by a river's vertical erosion in mountains: narrow floor, steep sides. A U-shaped valley is made by a glacier eroding both floor and sides: broad flat floor, steep walls.

Q4. What conditions help the work of wind? Name its depositional landforms.

Aridity (evaporation more than rainfall), sparse vegetation, loose dry material on the surface and strong enough wind. Depositional landforms: barchans, seif dunes and loess plains.

Q5. Explain the landforms made by groundwater.

In limestone areas, water with carbon dioxide dissolves rock and forms sinkholes and caves. Water dripping from a cave roof deposits calcium carbonate: stalactites grow down from the roof, stalagmites grow up from the floor, and when they join they form a pillar.

Exam tip

Learn a two-column table (erosion / deposition) for every agent with one Indian example each, and practise diagrams like the mushroom rock and wave-cut platform.

Quick summary

The world is divided into climatic (natural) regions on the basis of temperature, rainfall, winds and latitude. Climate decides the vegetation, animals, soil, farming and even people's food, clothes and houses in a region. The chapter covers low-, mid- and high-latitude climatic regions and mountain climate.

Key points

  • Temperature and rainfall are the main bases of classification; a climograph (temperature–rainfall graph) helps identify a place's climate.
  • Equatorial rainforest – about 0°–10° N/S; Amazon and Congo basins, Indonesia, Malaysia. Average about 27 °C all year, rainfall 2500–3000 mm (convectional), no distinct seasons, small temperature range. Dense three-layered evergreen forest, very high biodiversity, chemical weathering dominant.
  • Monsoon – 10°–30° N/S; India, South-East Asia. Summer 27–32 °C, winter 15–24 °C; rainfall 250–2500 mm, mainly from the south-west monsoon. Seasons change with the shift of the ITCZ. Deciduous forests, rice farming.
  • Tropical grassland (Savanna) – 10°–20° N/S; Africa, Llanos (Venezuela), Campos (Brazil); in India the rain-shadow part of Maharashtra, Telangana, Karnataka. Wet summer, dry winter, rainfall 250–1000 mm; tall coarse grass (elephant grass), scattered trees, herbivores, cattle rearing.
  • Hot desert (arid) – 20°–30° N/S on the western sides of continents; Sahara, Thar (Rajasthan, Gujarat). Rainfall below 200 mm, high daily range, thorny scrub, saline soil, oasis farming.
  • A) Low-latitude regions:
  • Mediterranean – 30°–40° N/S, western coasts (Mediterranean coasts, central California, Cape Town). Warm dry summers, mild rainy winters (500–1000 mm, winter rain). Evergreen shrubs with tough leaves; olives, grapes, citrus fruits.
  • China type (humid subtropical) – 20°–40°, eastern coasts (south China, south-east USA, eastern Australia). Hot humid summers, rain all year (600–2500 mm); mixed forests; rice, cotton, sugarcane.
  • Marine west coast (West European) – 45°–60°, western coasts (western Europe, western Canada, New Zealand). Mild summers, rain all year from the westerlies, cloudy weather; grass, pastures, fishing.
  • B) Mid-latitude regions:
  • Taiga (sub-arctic) – 55°–65° N; northern North America, Scandinavia to Siberia. Short cool summer, very cold winter; coniferous forests, softwood, acidic soil, fur-animal hunting.
  • Tundra – 65°–90° N; Arctic coasts, Greenland. Summer about 10 °C, winter −20 to −30 °C; mosses and lichens; Eskimos (Inuit); seals, walruses, polar bears.
  • Polar ice cap – Antarctica, interior Greenland; even the warmest month is below 0 °C; no vegetation; research stations.
  • C) High-latitude regions:
  • Mountain climate – changes with altitude; windward slopes get more rain; snowfall at high altitude; terrace farming.

Important terms

  • Climatic region – a large area with similar temperature and rainfall conditions.
  • ITCZ – Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone, the low-pressure belt near the equator where trade winds meet.
  • Convectional rain – rain from warm moist air rising and cooling.
  • Temperature range – difference between maximum and minimum temperature.
  • Oasis – a green spot with water in a desert.

Taiga55°–65° Nlow, winter snowConiferous forest
Tundra65°–90° N300–500 mm, mostly snowMosses, lichens

5 important questions

Q1. Give reasons: The daily range of temperature is high in deserts.

Skies are clear and there is little moisture or vegetation. Sand heats quickly by day and loses heat quickly at night, so day and night temperatures differ greatly.

Q2. Give reasons: There are no seasons in the equatorial region.

The sun's rays fall almost vertically all year and day and night are nearly equal, so temperature stays about 27 °C throughout and convectional rain falls daily. No clear summer or winter develops.

Q3. Distinguish between the monsoon and Mediterranean climates.

Monsoon regions get rain in summer from the south-west monsoon and have dry winters; deciduous forests and rice. Mediterranean regions have dry summers and winter rain; evergreen tough-leaved shrubs and grapes, olives and citrus.

Q4. Describe the climate and human life of the savanna.

It lies between 10° and 20° latitude, with a wet summer, dry winter, 250–1000 mm rain and a high temperature range. Tall grass with scattered drought-resistant trees, and large herbivores and carnivores. Cattle rearing is the main occupation; irregular rain brings droughts.

Q5. Write the features of the tundra region.

Latitude 65°–90° N; short summer of about 10 °C and winters of −20 to −30 °C; precipitation mostly as snow. Mosses and lichens, marshes when snow melts in summer. Eskimos live by hunting and fishing; minerals and oil are found.

Exam tip

For each region remember the order location – temperature – rainfall – vegetation – human life, and practise reading climographs.

Global Climate Change

Climate change means changes in the earth's average climate over a long period (about 30 years or more). In the 20th century the earth's average surface temperature rose by about 0.8 °C. This chapter covers the effects, natural and human causes, the tools used to study past climate, and the steps taken by India and the world.

Key points

  • The average surface temperature of the earth is about 14 °C. The difference of a reading from the long-term average is called an anomaly.
  • Severe heat waves (Chicago 1995, Paris 2003 – hundreds died).
  • Sea-level rise of about 3 mm per year, from melting glaciers and ice sheets. In India, Kutch, Konkan, Mumbai, south Kerala and the east-coast deltas are at risk.
  • Retreat of glaciers – the Gangotri glacier (Uttarkashi, Garhwal Himalaya) has retreated more than 850 m in 25 years; 76 m in 1996–1999; about 22 m per year.
  • Extreme rain and floods (Mumbai 2005, Kedarnath 2013); drought-hit area has doubled since 1970; more cyclones.
  • Changes in crop seasons and farm output; jellyfish blooms; if sea temperature stays 1–2 °C higher for long, coral bleaching (corals lose colour).
  • Effects:
  • Natural causes: changes in solar energy; Milankovitch oscillations (changes in sun–earth distance; moving farther raises the chance of an ice age); volcanic dust and sulphur dioxide block sunlight (cooling after El Chichón 1982 and Pinatubo 1991).
  • Human causes: burning fossil fuels and cutting forests increase carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. CO₂ above 350 ppm is considered harmful.
  • Tools to study climate change (palaeoclimatology): instrument records cover only about 140 years; before that we use tree rings, ice cores from Greenland and Antarctica, coral reefs, ocean and lake sediments, and fossils (e.g. the mammoth).
  • The last ice age ended about 10,000 years ago. Since the mid-20th century, human-caused change has been faster than anything in the last ten thousand years.
  • Global efforts: IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change; five assessment reports and the 2018 special report on 1.5 °C), UNFCCC (Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit, 9 May 1992), Kyoto Protocol, Paris Agreement 2016 (limit warming to 1.5 °C).
  • India: National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC, 2008 – 8 missions), Climate Change Adaptation Fund (run through NABARD), National Clean Energy Fund (from a tax on coal).
  • Lifestyle changes: walk short distances, use energy-saving devices, buy only what you need, avoid plastic.

Important terms

  • Climate change – long-term change in average climate.
  • Anomaly – difference of temperature from the average (plus or minus).
  • Greenhouse gases – gases that trap heat (carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, water vapour).
  • Palaeoclimate – climate of the ancient past.
  • Coral bleaching – corals turning white due to warmer water.

Key facts

EventYear
Rio Earth Summit, UNFCCC1992
India's NAPCC2008
Paris Agreement2016
IPCC special report on 1.5 °C2018

5 important questions

Q1. State the natural causes of climate change.

Variation in solar energy, Milankovitch oscillations that change the sun–earth distance, and volcanic eruptions that put dust and sulphur dioxide into the air, blocking sunlight and lowering temperature.

Q2. Give reasons: Rising sea level is a threat to coastal regions.

Melting glaciers and polar ice raise the sea by about 3 mm a year. Low coasts, deltas and coastal cities (Mumbai, Kutch, Konkan) may be flooded, salt water enters farmland and storm damage increases.

Q3. Explain the tools used to study climate change.

The width of annual tree rings shows that year's climate. Layers of ice in Greenland and Antarctica, with trapped air bubbles, show past gas levels. Coral reefs, ocean and lake sediments and fossils also reveal ancient climate.

Q4. Write the effects of climate change.

Heat waves, sea-level rise, retreat of glaciers (Gangotri), heavy rain and floods, larger drought areas, more cyclones, changes in crop output, coral bleaching and changes in marine life.

Q5. What steps has India taken against climate change?

The National Action Plan on Climate Change in 2008 (8 missions), the Climate Change Adaptation Fund (through NABARD), the National Clean Energy Fund from a tax on coal, and participation in the Kyoto Protocol and Paris Agreement.

Exam tip

Learn the agreements with their years as a table; the Gangotri figures and "tools to study climate change" are frequently asked.

Ocean Resources

Quick summary

Oceans are a huge store of food, minerals, energy, drinking water and a route for transport. The ocean floor has landforms like those on land: continental shelf, continental slope, abyssal plains, trenches and ridges. The chapter covers ocean-floor relief, biotic and abiotic ocean resources, the law of the sea and ocean pollution.

Key points

  • The ocean floor is studied with the echo sounder and SONAR; the echo sounder has been in regular use since 1920.
  • Continental shelf: about 7.6% of the ocean floor; shallow (about 180–200 m), gentle slope. Rich in plankton, so major fishing grounds; large oil and natural gas reserves (e.g. Mumbai High in the Arabian Sea); sand, gravel and other minerals.
  • Continental slope: about 8.5%; steep, treated as the true edge of the continent. Methane hydrate is found here – the Krishna–Godavari offshore basin (about 1400 sq km) is rich in it. Submarine canyons (e.g. the Congo canyon off Africa).
  • Abyssal (deep-sea) plains: about 66%; gentle slope; manganese nodules (with iron, nickel, cobalt, copper) are found here.
  • Ocean trenches: the deepest parts, near plate boundaries, with volcanoes and earthquakes. Mariana Trench (Pacific, about 11 km – the world's deepest), Java (Sunda) Trench (Indian Ocean, about 7.7 km).
  • Ridges and seamounts: homes of special life forms, so ecologically important ; ocean plateaus (e.g. the Chagos plateau in the Indian Ocean).
  • Islands: continental, volcanic (Hawaii) and coral (Aldabra).
  • Biotic resources: fish, plankton, mangroves, corals, seaweed (food, fertiliser, medicines), shells, pearls.
  • Abiotic resources: salt, oil and gas, manganese nodules and other minerals.
  • Energy and water: tidal energy, ocean thermal energy; desalination gives drinking water (Saudi Arabia, Oman, UAE, Spain, Algeria, Cyprus). It is costly, and plankton and small fish get sucked into plants, harming the food chain.
  • Transport and tourism: sea transport is the cheapest; the Atlantic sea route is the world's most important and busiest. Boating, scuba diving, beach tourism.
  • Law of the Sea (UNCLOS, 1982): up to 12 nautical miles from the coast = territorial waters; up to 200 nautical miles = Exclusive Economic Zone; resources of the open ocean beyond are used only with the consent of international bodies.
  • Ocean pollution: oil spills, offshore oil mining, radioactive waste, nuclear tests, sewage, industrial waste and plastic (a plastic bag made about 30 years earlier was found even at the bottom of the Mariana Trench – news of March 2018).

Important terms

  • Continental shelf – shallow, gently sloping submerged edge of a continent.
  • Continental slope – the steep slope beyond the shelf.
  • Ocean trench – a very deep, narrow depression in the ocean floor.
  • Desalination – removing salt from sea water to make it drinkable.
  • Exclusive Economic Zone – sea area up to 200 nautical miles where only that country may use the resources.

Key facts

Part of ocean floorShareImportance
Continental shelf7.6%Fishing, oil and gas (Mumbai High)
Continental slope8.5%Methane hydrate (Krishna–Godavari)
Abyssal plains66%Manganese nodules
Trenches—Mariana ~11 km, Java ~7.7 km

5 important questions

Q1. Give reasons: Fishing is well developed on continental shelves.

Shelves are shallow, so sunlight reaches the bottom and nutrients brought by rivers collect there. Plankton grows abundantly, which supports large fish populations, and the shallow water makes fishing easy.

Q2. Give reasons: Our knowledge of ocean trenches is limited.

Trenches are extremely deep (Mariana about 11 km) with huge pressure, darkness and cold. Being inaccessible, they are very hard and costly to explore.

Q3. Write a note on the Exclusive Economic Zone.

Under UNCLOS (1982), the sea up to 200 nautical miles from a country's coast is its Exclusive Economic Zone. Only that country may use its fish, minerals, oil and gas. The first 12 nautical miles are its territorial waters.

Q4. "Ocean pollution will prove harmful to humans." Discuss.

Oil spills, sewage, industrial and radioactive waste and plastic kill marine life and break food chains. Fish catches fall, eating polluted fish harms health, and tourism and coastal economies suffer. Since humans will depend more on oceans for food, water and minerals, this pollution ultimately harms us.

Q5. Explain the similarity between landforms on land and the ocean floor.

Like plains on land there are abyssal plains, like mountains there are ridges and seamounts, like valleys there are submarine canyons and trenches, and like plateaus there are ocean plateaus. Some underwater mountain peaks rise above the sea as islands.

Exam tip

Learn the table of ocean-floor parts with their share and resources, and remember the law-of-the-sea numbers: 12 and 200 nautical miles.

Indian Ocean - Relief and Strategic Importance

Quick summary

The Indian Ocean is the third largest ocean after the Pacific and the Atlantic, and the only ocean named after a country. It is closed in the north by Asia, so the monsoon strongly affects it. The chapter covers its relief, islands, basins, trenches, temperature, salinity, currents, and its economic and strategic importance.

Key points

  • Continental shelf: wide off India's west coast, narrow off the east coast; narrow off Africa–Madagascar and Indonesia.
  • Mid-Indian Ocean Ridge: starts near the Gulf of Aden and runs south; east of Madagascar it splits – the south-west branch goes to the Prince Edward Islands and the south-east branch to Amsterdam–St Paul Islands.
  • Plateaus and ridges: Chagos–Lakshadweep plateau (with the coral islands of Lakshadweep, Maldives and Diego Garcia), the Ninety East Ridge in the Bay of Bengal near 90° E, and the Kerguelen, Madagascar and Agulhas plateaus.
  • Islands: Arabian Sea side – Madagascar (largest, 5.9 lakh sq km; separated twice, first from Africa, then from the Indo-Australian plate; earthquake prone), Comoros, Réunion, Mauritius, Seychelles, Socotra. Bay of Bengal – Sri Lanka, Andaman and Nicobar. Near Australia – Ashmore, Christmas and Cocos (Keeling).
  • Ocean basins: about ten major basins – Oman, Arabian, Somali, Mauritius, Mascarene, Agulhas–Natal, West Australian, Central Indian, Ganga and others. They are the final resting places of sediments.
  • Trenches: fewer than in other oceans, mostly in the east on the convergent boundary of the Indo-Australian and Pacific plates – Sunda Trench (7450 m) and Ob Trench (6875 m); an earthquake-prone zone.
  • Temperature: highest near the equator before the monsoon; the Arabian Sea cools during the south-west monsoon; during the north-east monsoon the northern Bay of Bengal is about 24 °C.
  • Salinity: average 35 parts per thousand (ppt). High near the Somali peninsula and Saudi coast (high temperature, little rain, few rivers). Low in the Bay of Bengal because of the Ganga and peninsular rivers; lowest during the south-west monsoon.
  • Currents: currents in the north reverse with the monsoon – clockwise in summer, anticlockwise in winter. The south has a circular system: South Equatorial Current (east to west), Mozambique–Agulhas Current in the west, the West Wind Drift (west to east) and the West Australian Current in the east. Few cold currents.
  • Economic importance: links Africa, Asia and Australia; has the busy straits of Hormuz, Malacca and Bab-el-Mandeb. The Strait of Hormuz (33–95 km wide; Iran and Oman) carries about 30% of world oil exports. About 40% of the world's offshore oil comes from the Indian Ocean. Island nations like the Maldives and Seychelles depend on marine tourism.
  • Importance for India: central and strategic position; most oil imports from the Gulf come by this route; the International Seabed Authority has given India about 2 million sq km for exploring polymetallic nodules. India's policy: keep it a zone of peace, cooperate with coastal nations (e.g. Mekong–Ganga Cooperation), grow trade with ASEAN, and protect sea lanes from piracy and maritime terrorism through the Navy and Coast Guard.

Important terms

  • Strait – narrow strip of water joining two large water bodies.
  • Convergent boundary – where two plates move towards each other; trenches form here.
  • Salinity – amount of salt in sea water, in parts per thousand (ppt).
  • Gyre – circular loop of ocean currents.
  • Polymetallic nodules – ocean-floor lumps containing manganese, nickel, copper and cobalt.

5 important questions

Q1. Give reasons: The Arabian Sea is more saline than the Bay of Bengal.

The Arabian Sea is surrounded by hot dry lands, so evaporation is high, rain is low and few big rivers enter it. The Bay of Bengal receives huge amounts of fresh water from the Ganga, Brahmaputra and peninsular rivers, which lowers its salinity.

Q2. Give reasons: Currents in the north Indian Ocean change direction with the season.

The north Indian Ocean is enclosed by Asia, and the monsoon winds reverse with the seasons. Under the south-west monsoon the currents flow clockwise in summer, and under the north-east monsoon anticlockwise in winter.

Q3. Why are trenches few and mostly in the east of the Indian Ocean?

Trenches form at convergent plate boundaries. In the Indian Ocean such a boundary lies mainly in the east, near Java–Sumatra, between the Indo-Australian and Pacific plates, so only a few trenches like Sunda and Ob are found there.

Q4. Explain the economic and strategic importance of the Indian Ocean.

It has major sea routes joining three continents, the Hormuz, Malacca and Bab-el-Mandeb straits, Gulf oil traffic, about 40% of offshore oil output, heavy-mineral sands and polymetallic nodules, fishing and tourism. So world powers keep naval bases here and rivalry has grown.

Q5. State the importance of the Indian Ocean for India.

India has a central position; its oil imports and trade use this ocean; it has about 2 million sq km for nodule exploration; and the ocean is vital for fishing, ports and security. Hence India wants it to remain a zone of peace and cooperates with coastal countries.

Biomes

Quick summary

A biome is a large community of plants and animals adapted to the climate of a wide region. One biome contains many ecosystems. Biome boundaries depend mainly on climate (temperature and rainfall) and latitude. The chapter covers nine major land biomes of the world and human impact on them.

Key points

  • Factors deciding a biome: temperature, rainfall, soil, sunlight, altitude and latitude. Biodiversity is highest near the equator and decreases towards the poles.
  • 1) Tropical rainforest biome – near the equator; hot and very wet all year. Dense, tall evergreen trees, orchids, creepers, ferns, mosses; the highest biodiversity.
  • 2) Tropical deciduous biome – monsoon lands; trees shed leaves in the dry season. Teak is the main commercial tree.
  • 3) Savanna grassland biome – tall grass with scattered short trees; large herbivores and carnivores; wildlife areas are shrinking due to human activity.
  • 4) Tropical desert biome – very little rain, high temperature range. Thorny plants such as date palm, khejdi and babul; camels, monitor lizards, lizards, snakes, scorpions, desert tortoises. Irrigated farming and oases.
  • 5) Mediterranean biome (chaparral) – 30°–40° N and S; dry summers, wet winters. Fruit trees and flowering shrubs – rosemary, cork oak, olive, eucalyptus, peach, pine, cedar, cypress.
  • 6) Temperate deciduous biome – four clear seasons; trees shed leaves in winter. Beech, elm, chestnut, oak, willow, cherry, maple, walnut.
  • 7) Temperate grassland biome – interiors of continents; Prairies (North America), Steppes (Eurasia), Pampas (South America), Veld (South Africa), Downs (Australia). Now major wheat and livestock (wool, meat, hides) regions.
  • 8) Taiga (boreal) biome – 50°–65° N; very cold winters. Evergreen coniferous forests famous for softwood (paper, pulp); few people live here.
  • 9) Tundra biome – Arctic; treeless; stunted plants. Animals: bears, musk ox, reindeer, caribou, lemmings, hares, Arctic wolves, foxes – with thick fur and layers of fat.
  • Human impact: deforestation, farming, urbanisation and hunting are shrinking biomes; national parks, sanctuaries and biosphere reserves help conservation.

Important terms

  • Biome – plant and animal community of a large region with similar climate.
  • Ecosystem – interdependent system of living and non-living parts.
  • Deciduous tree – a tree that sheds its leaves in one season.
  • Coniferous tree – cone-shaped tree with needle-like leaves.
  • Chaparral – shrub forest of Mediterranean regions.

5 important questions

Q1. What is a biome? What factors decide it?

A biome is a community of plants and animals adapted to a similar climate over a large area. It depends mainly on temperature, rainfall, latitude, altitude, soil and sunlight.

Q2. Give reasons: Biodiversity is highest in the equatorial region.

Heat, sunlight and rain all year allow continuous plant growth. The dense, many-layered forest gives food and shelter to many kinds of animals, so biodiversity is highest.

Q3. Give reasons: Softwood industries have developed in the taiga.

The taiga has vast, uniform coniferous forests whose soft, light wood is ideal for paper, pulp and furniture; in winter logs are easily moved over snow.

Q4. State the importance of the temperate grassland biome.

The Prairies, Steppes, Pampas, Veld and Downs have fertile soil and flat land, so large-scale mechanised wheat farming has developed; livestock give wool, meat and hides. They are called the granaries of the world.

Q5. How are tundra animals adapted to the cold?

Animals like bears, musk oxen, reindeer and caribou have thick fur and a layer of fat under the skin. Some migrate in winter or hibernate.

Exam tip

For each biome, remember its location on the world map and one plant and one animal as a pair.

Disaster Management

Quick summary

A hazard is a natural or human-made event that can threaten life and property; when it actually strikes and causes large loss, it becomes a disaster. The impact of a disaster depends on people's vulnerability and coping capacity. The chapter covers types of disasters, their effects, the stages of disaster management and disaster management in India.

Key points

  • Hazard and disaster: a hazard is a possible danger; it becomes a disaster when it hits people and causes heavy loss. An earthquake in the empty Sahara is a hazard; the same earthquake in densely populated Assam is a disaster.
  • Vulnerability – how likely people are to be harmed, due to social, economic and geographical conditions.
  • Coping capacity – ability to face a disaster using available resources, skills and preparation. Example: the 1999 cyclone killed thousands in Odisha, but the 2019 cyclone killed only 89 because of early warning and evacuation.
  • Tectonic – earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis (26 December 2004 earthquake and tsunami, Indonesia).
  • Geological – landslides, mudslides, avalanches (2014 Malin mudslide).
  • Climatic – floods, cyclones, storms, heat waves (2018 Kerala floods).
  • Biological – locust attacks, pests, epidemics (1992 Surat plague).
  • Human-made – industrial, transport and nuclear accidents (1984 Bhopal gas leak – methyl isocyanate).
  • Types of disasters (by origin):
  • Effects: deaths, injuries, homelessness, damage to infrastructure and crops, economic loss, disease and mental trauma; the poor, elderly, children and women suffer most.
  • Disaster management is multi-disciplinary: monitoring, early warning and mitigation; evacuation, search and rescue; medical aid; food, clothing and shelter; reconstruction and rehabilitation.
  • Disaster management cycle: before (prevention, mitigation, preparedness) → during (response, rescue) → after (rehabilitation, reconstruction).
  • Role of technology: remote sensing, GIS and GPS help to map risk zones, give early warnings and guide relief work.
  • India: because of its geo-climatic conditions and high vulnerability, India is one of the most disaster-prone countries. The National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) are in New Delhi, with authorities at state and district levels too.

Important terms

  • Hazard – a possible dangerous event that can cause harm.
  • Disaster – an event causing heavy loss of life and property to a community.
  • Vulnerability – the chance of being harmed by a disaster.
  • Mitigation – steps to reduce the impact of a disaster.
  • Rehabilitation – helping victims return to a stable life.

Key facts

TypeExample
Tectonic2004 Indonesia earthquake and tsunami
Geological2014 Malin mudslide
Climatic2018 Kerala floods
Biological1992 Surat plague
Human-made1984 Bhopal gas leak

5 important questions

Q1. Distinguish between a hazard and a disaster.

A hazard is a possible harmful event; in an uninhabited area it causes little loss. A disaster is when a hazard strikes people and causes heavy loss of life and property, beyond what the community can handle on its own.

Q2. Give reasons: The same disaster has different effects in different regions.

Effects depend on population density, type of houses, economic condition, warning systems and coping capacity. Areas with higher vulnerability suffer greater loss.

Q3. Classify disasters by origin with examples.

Tectonic (2004 tsunami), geological (2014 Malin), climatic (2018 Kerala floods), biological (1992 Surat plague) and human-made (1984 Bhopal gas leak).

Q4. Explain the stages of disaster management.

Before: identifying risk, prevention, mitigation and preparedness (training, warnings). During: evacuation, search and rescue, medical aid, food and shelter. After: assessing damage, reconstruction and rehabilitation.

Q5. State the role of remote sensing and GIS in disaster management.

Satellite images show flood-, cyclone- and landslide-prone areas and track cyclones for early warning. GIS makes hazard maps to plan relief centres and safe routes, while GPS gives exact locations of affected places.

Exam tip

Quick summary

Practical geography teaches us to read, draw and analyse maps. This part covers drawing isolines by interpolation, drawing a cross-section (profile) from contours, the marginal information of a topographical map, grid references, analysis of relief, drainage and natural vegetation on toposheets, and reading weather maps.

Key points

  • Practical 1 – Interpolation: drawing isolines by finding places of equal value from given point values. Examples: isotherms (temperature), isobars (air pressure), isohyets (rainfall), contours (height). The distance between two points is divided in proportion to their values to locate intermediate points.
  • Practical 2 – Drawing a cross-section: a vertical slice of the land drawn from contours. Place a paper strip along the line on the map, mark where contours cross with their heights → on graph paper put distance on the x-axis and height on the y-axis → join the points. The y-axis scale is larger, so the section is vertically exaggerated.
  • Reading slopes: evenly spaced contours – even slope; far apart – gentle slope; close together – steep slope.
  • Practical 3 – Topographical map and marginal information: maps of the Survey of India, usually on a 1:50,000 scale. The margin gives the sheet number, latitude–longitude extent (in degrees and minutes), scale, districts covered and the legend of symbols and colours. First find north and the scale, then set the map.
  • Practical 4 – Grid references: vertical lines are eastings, horizontal lines are northings. Read the easting first, then the northing. A 4-figure reference gives a grid square; dividing each side into ten gives a 6-figure reference for an exact point.
  • Practicals 5–7 – Toposheet analysis: relief (contours, spot heights, hills, valleys, plateaus, slopes), drainage (direction of rivers, drainage patterns such as dendritic and parallel, tanks, wells) and natural vegetation (reserved/protected forests, scrub – shown in green).
  • Practicals 8–10 – Weather map analysis: maps of the India Meteorological Department; read isobars, high- and low-pressure areas, wind direction and speed, temperature, rainfall and sky (cloud) symbols to describe the weather.

Important terms

  • Isoline – a line joining places of equal value on a map.
  • Contour – a line joining places of equal height above sea level.
  • Interpolation – estimating values between known points.
  • Cross-section (profile) – a diagram showing a vertical slice of land.
  • Marginal information – details printed in the margin of a map.
  • Isobar – a line joining places of equal air pressure.

5 important questions

Q1. What is an isoline? Give two examples.

A line on a map joining places with the same value of an element. Examples: isotherms (temperature) and isobars (air pressure).

Q2. How do you identify the type of slope from contours?

Contours close together show a steep slope, far apart a gentle slope, and evenly spaced an even slope.

Q3. Write the steps for drawing a cross-section.

Fix the section line on the map; place a paper edge on it and mark where each contour crosses with its height; on graph paper take distance on the x-axis and height on the y-axis; transfer the marks and join the points to complete the profile.

Q4. What information is given in the margin of a toposheet?

Sheet number, scale (usually 1:50,000), latitude and longitude extent, districts covered, north direction, the legend of symbols and colours, and the year of publication.

Q5. Distinguish between 4-figure and 6-figure grid references.

A 4-figure reference (2 digits easting + 2 digits northing) gives a whole grid square. In a 6-figure reference each side is imagined divided into ten and one more digit is added to each, giving the exact point within the square.

Exam tip

Always read "eastings first, then northings", and clearly state both scales when drawing a cross-section.
