The intelligence test (बुद्धिमत्ता चाचणी) checks how fast you see a pattern. There is very little to memorise – a few tables and rules below – the rest is practice. Official marks per subject are not announced; past papers usually had about a quarter of the questions from this part.
1. Alphabet positions – learn this first
| A 1 | B 2 | C 3 | D 4 | E 5 | F 6 | G 7 | H 8 | I 9 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| J 10 | K 11 | L 12 | M 13 | N 14 | O 15 | P 16 | Q 17 | R 18 |
| S 19 | T 20 | U 21 | V 22 | W 23 | X 24 | Y 25 | Z 26 |
- Trick “EJOTY”: E = 5, J = 10, O = 15, T = 20, Y = 25.
- Opposite letters add up to 27: A–Z, B–Y, C–X, D–W, M–N (A + Z = 1 + 26 = 27).
- Reverse position = 27 − position (reverse position of D = 27 − 4 = 23).
2. Number series (संख्या मालिका)
Check in this order: difference → difference of differences → multiply/divide → squares/cubes → two series mixed.
- 5, 9, 13, 17, ? → +4 each → 21.
- 2, 6, 12, 20, 30, ? → differences 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 → 42 (also 1×2, 2×3, 3×4…).
- 2, 6, 18, 54, ? → × 3 → 162.
- 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, ? → squares → 36.
- 3, 10, 5, 12, 7, 14, ? → two series (3, 5, 7… and 10, 12, 14…) → 9.
3. Letter series and analogy (अक्षर मालिका, सहसंबंध)
- A, C, E, G, ? → +2 → I. Z, X, V, T, ? → −2 → R.
- Analogy: find the rule in the first pair, apply it to the second. Example: 3 : 27 :: 5 : ? → cube → 125. Doctor : Hospital :: Teacher : School.
4. Odd one out (वर्गीकरण)
- Find what is common to three and missing in one. Example: 11, 13, 17, 21, 23 → 21 is not prime.
- Example: Mango, Banana, Potato, Guava → potato is a vegetable.
5. Coding–decoding (सांकेतिक भाषा)
- Shift code: If GOOD = HPPE (each letter +1), then BAD = CBE.
- Number code: If CAB = 3-1-2 (positions), then FED = 6-5-4.
- Reverse code: If PEN is written as NEP, then CUP is written as PUC.
- Word code: If “sky” is called “sea”, “sea” is called “road”, then where do fish live? → in the thing called “road” (because fish live in the sea, and the sea is now called road).
6. Blood relations (नातेसंबंध)
- Draw a small family tree: male = □, female = ○, marriage = a line between them.
- Key words: father's or mother's father = grandfather; father's brother = uncle (काका); mother's brother = uncle (मामा); brother's wife = sister-in-law (वहिनी).
- Example: Pointing to a boy, Meena says, “He is the son of my mother's only son.” The mother's only son is Meena's brother, so the boy is her nephew (पुतण्या).
7. Directions (दिशा)
- North is up, East is right, South is down, West is left.
- Right turn: N → E → S → W → N. Left turn: N → W → S → E → N.
- For straight-line distance use Pythagoras: √(a² + b²). Example: 3 km east, then 4 km north → distance from start = √(9 + 16) = 5 km, towards the north-east.
- At sunrise your shadow falls to the west; in the evening it falls to the east.
8. Ranking and order (क्रम)
- Total in a row = position from left + position from right − 1.
- Example: Sunil is 9th from the front and 14th from the back → 9 + 14 − 1 = 22 students.
9. Calendar and clock (दिनदर्शिका, घड्याळ)
- An ordinary year has 365 days = 52 weeks + 1 odd day; a leap year has 2 odd days. A year divisible by 4 is a leap year; a century year (1900, 2000) is a leap year only if divisible by 400.
- Example: 15 August 2025 was a Friday → 15 August 2026 is a Saturday (2026 is not a leap year, 1 odd day).
- Clock angle: θ = |30H − 5.5M| (H = hour, M = minutes). At 4:20 → |120 − 110| = 10°.
- The hands are together about every 65 5/11 minutes, so they coincide 11 times in 12 hours (22 times in a day).
10. Statements and conclusions – Venn diagram (विधाने – निष्कर्ष)
- “All A are B” → draw circle A inside circle B. “Some A are B” → two overlapping circles. “No A is B” → separate circles.
- Example: All policemen are citizens. Some citizens are players. Conclusion “Some policemen are players” → does not follow (it may or may not be true).
Practice MCQs (with answers)

Exam tip
Write the alphabet with numbers (A1 … Z26) on your rough sheet in the first minute of the exam – it saves time in every series and coding question. In blood relations, always draw the tree; don't solve in your head.
